One of the most effectives to learn how to potty train a puppy fast is to not only limit the freedom the dog has in roaming around the house but also to train the dog to use the potty in one unique place. If the puppy is allowed to freely explore the entire house, then there is a high possibility that it will do its business in an inappropriate place. In addition, once the puppy has gone potty (toilet) within the house, it will be drawn to return to the very same spot by the smell of its urine and feces.

Since dogs by instinct do not defecate in their sleeping area, it will be a good idea for you to keep the puppy's sleeping areas and bathroom separate, otherwise you risk altering this very useful behavior. If you hope to learn how to potty train a new puppy, then you must not let if defecate wherever it wants to or else the puppy will never learn that it is necessary to hold its bowels. If you haven't spent the necessary time and effort to house train your puppy, then you don't have the right to get upset with it when it decides to use your plush carpet as a bathroom (potty).

Neither can the puppy be shown the right place to eliminate its waste only once or two and then be expected to take care of its business all on its own nor can you just take it to the potty to eliminate a couple of times each day. In a way, it helps to think of puppies like babies as they are both somewhat similar and have several similar needs. Puppies will have to defecate and/or urinate every few hours, after each meal, after waking up and right before bedtime. In case you're wondering 'how long does it take to potty train a puppy', well, the answer will vary. In some cases, it might take 2-3 weeks whereas in other cases, it might take up to 3 months.

As the puppy owner, you have the responsibility of spotting the signals which indicate clearly that the puppy wants to go to the bathroom. Some of these signs include the following: walking around in a circular motion with its bottom close to the ground or intently smelling at one particular spot. Since you will have chosen a suitable "spot" for your new puppy to use as its bathroom by then, you must take it to that location immediately after each meal and/or after every couple of hours.
