Many years ago, when I was a young apprentice, the older engineers would have a bit of fun by sending me on fool's errands. I would be sent for a bucket of steam, a long stand and, quite frequently, a left handed screwdriver. The joke was that none of these things exist - including the screwdriver.

It was okay - a bit of a laugh, but there are times when left handed people will genuinely require a special design of an item to take their handedness into account. One such example of this would be watches.

left handed watch

Left handed watch wearers have a variety of choices when it comes to watches. They can decide to:

  1. Wear a "standard", right handed watch on their left wrist and get used to it.
  2. Wear a "standard", right handed watch on their right wrist. they will need to stretch over the watch to operate the controls, which will be on the wrong side to access using their left hand.
  3. get hold of a specially designed left handed watch, with the controls on the left hand side of the face, and wear it on their right wrist. It will then be easy to access the controls using their left hand.

Unless you are a "lefty", you might be wondering what all the fuss is about. Why not just go for option 1 and wear a standard watch on the left wrist?

The answer is simple. Left handed people will use their main hand for writing, drinking coffee, operating controls etc. If they wear their watch on their left wrist, then every time that they want to check the time, they will need to stop whatever they are doing with their left hand, be it writing, handling a cup of coffee - whatever. It really is much more convenient to wear your watch on your right wrist if you're left handed.

Fortunately there are more and more specially designed left handed watches available on the market these days. Invicta watches have a very extensive range - and they don't cost any more than standard watches. There are plenty of other brands supplying lefty watches if you know just where to look.

That really is good news for the 10% of the population who favor their left hand. There's absolutely no reason to struggle with a watch which has a design which is less than optimal for your needs.
