I Pull My Blue Jeans On

It is an undeniable truth that jeans are the most reliable - never going to go out of fashion- most comfortable thing that you can pull out of your closet to wear. Anyone and everyone can pull on a pair of jeans and instantly transform themselves from "stressed out office worker" to "cool and relaxed smooth dude". There are however certain brands of jeans that just nail it if you're going for that "I'm too sexy for my job" look. The all time best seller and most comfortable brand of jeans are Levi Strauss and topping the list of styles within the Levi's range... the forever fashionable Levi 501's.

We All Love Jeans

Before we look at specifically why Levi 501's are the most popular style of jeans and how you can look "casually cool" by buttoning up a pair over your posterior, lets focus on a few interesting facts.

The end of 2012 showed that the most searched for fashion item on yahoo were jeans. There are many brands of denim, but none so popular as Levi's. It seems that both men and women just love to pull on a pair of these iconic jeans, ranking them in the number one position according to Time Magazines style section.

Levi Strauss and Co

The original and still the best and most popular brand, in a now flooded market of denim, I wonder if Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis (tailor) had any idea at the time that their invention would become what it is today? With the company headquarters now based in San Francisco, Levi's is still a family run business, being managed by descendants and relatives of Strauss.

When originally designed, the 501's were cut down from working overalls or dungarees, which is what gives them that hang of the body look. Fitting into the category of "anti-fit design", gives this style many advantages. It is a cut that never goes out of fashion, it doesn't follow the contours or curves of your body, so for those of us with a not so perfect body shape, this design is much more flattering, and they are so comfortable you wont ever want to take them off.

“I remember my first pair of Levis 501's, whereas I have long forgotten my first kiss,” - Robert Elms

The history of who has worn and popularised Levi 501's is quite eye raising stuff. Back in 1947 Marlon Brando really started a huge surge in the movement of these jeans by wearing them in his controversial movie "The Wild One", whilst James Dean and Eddie Cochrane also caused millions of teenagers to join in the 501 revolution. Johnny Depp, Noel Gallagher and for the women... Marilyn Monroe started to show that they too can also look amazing in a pair of 501's.

Design Features

This is part of what creates the hang off the body look, and totally gets rid of the embarrassing "fly falling down" or "zipper always breaking" problems. It is also a large reason of what makes them so comfortable to wear around the stomach, hips and waist area.

The leg of these jeans falls fashionably down into a boot-cut style, allowing the cuff to sit perfectly over your shoes creating that ultra-cool look, that has made them so popular.

Because the 501's design is loose and doesn't fit snuggly around your backside, the seat of these jeans will wear better than other styles, making these jeans seemingly last an eternity (lucky they never go out of fashion).

As far as denim tones, 501's are available in many colours and every type of denim wash, ranging from the rich dark shady wash, right through to the Golden Old Faded Denim look.

"They reason they attract such a discerning audience is because we like the item(Levi 501's) itself rather than the brand. “We are not buying into a concept, we are buying Levi’s selvage because they are the best and the simplest jeans. They are not subject to the vagaries of fashion” - GQ features editor Alex Bilmes.

How To Look Cool In Your 501's

Levi 501's are the most universal design on the planet and just having a pair of these jeans in your closet, opens up an endless stream of mix and match ideas to help get rid of the "hmm, what shall I wear today?" problem. You can wear them with anything, everything or absolutely nothing (if that's your thing).

Whilst going totally topless may be  kind of extreme, I do highly recommend the less is more theory, allowing you to stick with the basic design principle of the jeans themselves. For the easiest and the coolest look, throw on your jeans and pick a plain colored t-shirt. The most classic look of course is to go with the white or black t-shirt and blue 501's. If you want to accessorize a little... you can add to the mix a good belt, with a suitable (but not over the top) buckle. Make sure that your tee is not fully tucked in, but just tucked up enough to show the belt buckle off a little. If it's a little cold outside, a plain jacket or a long-sleeved black or white thermal top under your tshirt...super cool! In a nutshell, that is the basic 501 look. Basic, simple, fashionable, eternal and the coolest of cool. So what are you waiting for? Go out and stun your friends. I know you secretly want to be as cool as a modern-day James Dean or as sexily cute as the 501's wearing Marilyn Monroe.
