Library Facilities Manager--Job Description

Overview
A library facilities manager is a professional who plans, manages and directs the purchasing, repair and maintenance of library facilities and equipment. He develops short and long-term policy plans for managing and maintaining facilities and equipment owned by the library or within the library. He supervises the technical staff in the maintenance department and reports on facility needs and repairs of the library to a library manager or the chief librarian.
Education
A library facilities manager requires a Bachelor's degree in liberal arts in facility management, library science or management. He also requires an average of three years of progressive experience in a library or service institution with comparable demands and responsibilities.
Certification or Licensing
It is not a must for library facilities managers to get certification, but it is recommended for increased job prospects. The Certified Facilities Manager (CFM) offers certification for library facilities manager. To get certification, the manager is required to pass a comprehensive post-training examination before issuing a practice certificate.
Responsibilities and Duties
He supervises the care and maintenance of the library building and facilities. He also oversees the work of custodial library staff. He carries out regular reviews of the library building and other facilities. The library facilities manager advises the board or chief librarian concerning planning for future expansion or development. He assesses the existing facilities in regard to automated service delivery. He prepares and maintains accurate reports on the activities of the facilities department and manages assigned maintenance contracts including preparation of quotes, monitoring and evaluation of contractors as well as negotiating contractual agreements. The library facilities manager also prepares and monitors budgets associated with assigned maintenance contracts. He determines maintenance equipment, supplies and construction materials needed in the delivery of maintenance services. He serves as the liaison between the building staff and contractors/maintenance staff to correct emerging maintenance issues.
Desirable Skills
The library facilities manager is required to have the ability to manage the entire library facility and maintain effective working relationships with clients. He should have managerial skills as well as strong interpersonal and communication skills. He should be knowledgeable in structural architecture of the library facility he is expected to work in. He should be able to provide technical and professional support to repair and maintenance staff whenever the need arises. He should be quick at arithmetic and language especially in dealing with budgetary estimates and interdepartmental maintenance needs assessments.
