Life lesson #1 get out of your way

I've only been on this earth for 26 years but in this short period of time I've learned a few things. Weather it's not asking out that cute girl in class, passing the ball instead of taking the shot, or even ordering the burger and fries for the 100th time it's all about taking the chance. When you always play it safe you never have a chance to feel like a hero, and you never have a chance to fall flat on your face. I've lived my life as the mild mannered Clark Kent at times. I've also had the guts to put on my cape, and tights and fly around the city with a S on my chest.

So how do we not live our life timid and afraid. Well first off you have to step out of your own way every once in awhile. You have to actively seek out things that you know you want to do, but are too afraid to do. Then, the tough part is you have to do them. You don't always have to do them alone, but you'd probably be that much prouder of yourself when you do. You're friends and family can be there to comfort you and cheer you on.

Take me for example. Up until a few months ago I had no need for a passport. Then my friend from around the world invited me to stay with him in Thailand for a few months. I had the money, and the free time but i didn't want to do it. I was too scared and afraid of everything that could go wrong. Then i thought about it, and realized how awesome everything could be so i decided to take him up on his offer. I was still scared and afraid, but i was going to do it anyway. My friends and family didn't come with me but they supported me every step of the way. They made sure i got my passport and visa. They helped me pack, and even gave me a great send off.

It was only for two months and while i was over there i tried a lot of interesting and exciting things. I visited ancient temples and beautiful islands. I still can't believe how close I came to chickening out almost on a daily basis. I had to get out of my own way and stop letting myself freak out about it and just do it.

So maybe you don't half to fly halfway around the world to let yourself do something great, but whatever it is that you want in life you have to go after it. You have to try new things and experience all life has to offer. And sometimes you have to get out of your own way.
