Rich and Famous People Helping the Poor and Needy

This list of billionaire (not millionaire) philanthropists giving away free money to help people isn’t meant to be exhaustive, but it is meant to provide some form of recognition to those that are willing to help out worthy causes with their wealth.  In this article, I’ll list some of the more generous of the super-rich people that have pledged to give away half of their wealth during their lifetimes, or upon death, to worthy causes, like charitable organizations.  Three cheers for philanthropy and these well-known Forbes names!

Ted Turner

The television mogul already donated one billion dollars to the United Nations, making it possible to form the United Nations Foundations.  Mr. Turner has stated on numerous occasions that he fully intends to continue his philanthropic work and give free money to people in need.  Those less fortunate are sure to benefit from his work long after his time has passed.

David Rockefeller

With a famous name like Rockefeller, you know he has some serious money in the bank.  It’s refreshing to know he puts a majority of it to good work, help out organizations like the University of Chicago, The Rockefeller University, and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.  It’s great to hear of billionaires, like Rockefeller, who believe in helping out others when they need it.  He is a clearly a philanthropist that cares about others less fortunate than he is.  Thank you, Mr. Rockefeller.

Barron Hilton

Mr. Hilton will donate the majority of his wealth to the humanitarian work of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.  This pledge was made in 2007 and he has reiterated it several times.  Conrad N Hilton was Barron Hilton’s father.  It’s easy to see that with a pledge to donate over half of his wealth to help others, Hilton will be assisting many people in the coming years.

Michael R Bloomberg

He’s worth over 18 billion dollars and he still thinks of those less fortunate than he.  Bloomberg recently pledged to give the majority of his wealth to philanthropic causes through charitable donations.  That equals over nine billion dollars.  Non-profit groups will benefit greatly from his generosity.  The mayor of New York City deserves some special recognition for his giving attitude.   Believe it or not, politicians are well-known to give money to help people in need.

George Lucas

When he’s not making awesome movies, he’s giving away money to people that need financial assistance.  The needy are sure to benefit from his donations.  Lucas created Edutopia and the George Lucas Educational Foundation, which aim to improve education in this country.  Given Lucas’ net-worth of over $3.2 billion, it’s clear there will be much money to help people get the education they need to survive and excel.

Alfred E Mann

In 2007 Mann was the 204th richest man in America.  What does a philanthropist do when he’s worth that much? He gives a lot of it away.   Mann started his philanthropic program in 1985 with the Alfred Mann Foundation (AMF), which is a public medical research organization.  Long after Mann passes away, people will benefit from his medical donations to help those in need.

Mark Zuckerberg

It’s not just old money that goes to good philanthropic use.  Most of you probably know that Zuckerberg started up Facebook.  In 2010, he was recognized as Time Magazine’s Person of the Year and for good reason.  Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffet all signed something the call “The Giving Pledge,” vowing to donate at least half of their wealth to charitable causes.  They are gathering other billionaires to join them in the pledge, many of which were listed in this article.  A young, rich man that cares about others…what more could you ask for?

I hope you enjoyed this list of billionaire philanthropists giving away free money to help people in need.
