This movie was released in November of 2001 and it’s also known as the Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States of America. This movie is about a young boy named Harry Potter who lives with his Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia, and their son Dudley because his parents “supposedly” died in a car crash. In this movie and the following sequels, his uncle, aunt, and cousin are known for mistreating Harry because of their unlikable personalities and who his parents were. Upon his 11th birthday, Harry Potter receives a visit from a giant named Rubeus Hagrid who hands him a letter revealing that his father was a wizard, his mother was a witch and that means he’s also a wizard too by blood. He’s offered to be a student at a prestigious boarding school of magic named Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he accepts to go and start his new life as a student. Soon Harry quickly learns that his parents were in fact killed by an evil wizard named Voldemort when he was a baby and Harry wasn’t supposed to survive that incident as well. Harry now walks around with a lightning bolt scar on his forehead from that incident and is famous around Hogwarts because of the situation and the important people involved. Potter then makes friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger who stick by him throughout the rest of the film series. In this film you’ll watch as Harry gets involved with a popular wizard sport named Quidditch, suspects that someone is planning to steal the philosopher’s stone, and all three of the friends taking it upon themselves to stop the act since no one else believes them. This is only the beginning. The Philosopher’s Stone (Sorcerer’s Stone) was nominated for many awards and is one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Philosopher’s Stone received positive critical reception and is a great film to start the series.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

This movie was released in November of 2002 and is the 25th highest-grossing film of all time. This Story is about Harry in his second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It starts off with him having to spend his summer vacation with his muggle family Vernon, Petunia, and Dudley Dursley. He is then visited by a strange looking creature named Dobby who is a house-elf. Dobby comes to warn Harry not to attend Hogwarts this year because terrible things are going to happen, but Harry disregards this warning and goes anyway. As Harry and his friends settle into the school year at Hogwarts, strange things begin to happen just as Dobby warned. People are turning up petrified and in a statue-like state while Harry is also hearing voices coming from within the walls. They soon learn that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened and a monster is on the loose. Harry also finds out that he’s a Parsel-Tongue which means he can speak and understand the language of snakes which convinces many that Harry was responsible for opening the Chamber of Secrets. Because of this accusation, the three friends decide to find the culprit before all of Hogwarts is shut down or lives are taken. This movie features more faculty members teaching at Hogwarts and this is the last movie in which actor Richard Harris played Headmaster Dumbledore before he died. The Chamber of Secrets was nominated for three BAFTA film awards and is an awesome movie to watch.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

This movie was released in 2004 and is the last to be rated PG until The Half-Blood Prince was released. This movie follows Harry and his friends into their 3rd year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The movie starts off with Harry getting tired of his muggle family and when he uses magic to inflate his visiting and offensive aunt Marge, he runs away. There’s a rule at Hogwarts that you cannot use magic in the muggle world, so when Harry had broken this rule, he feared being penalized for it. Thankfully however, he doesn’t. Now the prisoner of Azkaban is a man named Sirius Black who was a follower of Lord Voldemort and his right-hand-man. He is said to be a convicted murderer and was the reason for the death of Harry Potter’s parents. The news is that Sirius Black has escaped the prison of Azkaban and is on the hunt to avenge his Lord’s failed mission by killing Harry Potter once and for all as originally intended 12-13 years ago. Azkaban then sends a number of creatures called Dementors to guard the school from Black where Harry is staying, yet these creatures have a horrible affect on Harry at the same time. As the film progresses you’ll watch and see that everything is not as they seem and not everybody is who they seem to be. This movie is the 33rd highest-grossing film of all time and was nominated for two Academy Awards in 2005. It is also the last film to be released on VHS and the first Harry Potter film to be released in IMAX theatres using IMAX technology.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

And it is one of the best reviewed installments within the series. This movie is also the first to be rated PG-13 because of the fantasy violence and frightening imagery present within this film. In this movie, Harry Potter and his friends are entering into their fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It starts off with Harry experiencing aching pain from his legendary scar he received from Lord Voldemort when he was a baby. He’s even experiencing mysterious visions coinciding with the pain. When Harry meets up with his friends Ron and Hermione before the school year begins, they attend the Quidditch World Cup Final where people are dressed like Lord Voldemort’s ‘Death Eaters’ and set the visitors’ tents on fire. When this happens, Lord Voldemort’s symbol called the ‘Dark Mark’ appears in the sky and that puts everyone in chaos within the community. The Dark Mark represents Voldemort being ready to rise again. Now at Hogwarts, the school is about to host a legendary event called the ‘Triwizard Tournament’. The Triwizard Tournament is a competition where student representatives of three different schools compete in dangerous tasks in order to be awarded eternal glory within the international wizard community. The Goblet of Fire which is a magical object is responsible for choosing the champions of each school to be a representative. Usually there’s only supposed to be 3 representatives but when the night of selection came about, the Goblet of Fire chose the fourth wizard to compete and it was of course, Harry Potter. Harry doesn’t want to compete but is forced to do so anyway. In this movie Harry deals with the challenges of keeping up with school, competing in the dangerous Triwizard Tournament, and the rebirth of Lord Voldemort who is still out to finish what he couldn’t do last time, Harry Potter. This film won the BAFTA Award for Best Production Design and was nominated for Best Art Direction at the Academy Awards. Goblet of Fire enjoyed immense box-office success when it was first released.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Pictures and is a critical and commercial success. Even author J.K. Rowling stated that it was “the best one yet” when it was released. In this film, you’ll watch as Harry and his friends return for their fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry unfortunately encountered the evil Lord Voldemort and as he returned to Hogwarts he realizes that everyone is in denial about his encounter and the return of the evil Lord. Cornelius Fudge of the Ministry of Magic believes that Headmaster Dumbledore is fueling these so-called “rumors” in order to overthrow Cornelius, so in return, he assigns Defense against the Dark Arts professor Dolores Jane Umbridge to take over Hogwarts. Dolores then arrives to the school completely changing all the rules and regulations to stricter ones that hinder the student body from being themselves and preparing for battle. The things that Dolores says and does in this movie will likely have you pinning her as a villain, and rightfully so. With most of the student body not believing Harry and making him out to be a liar for claiming that Voldemort is back, he and his friends Ron and Hermione take it upon themselves once again to take matters into their own hands. They form a small group of students they named ‘Dumbledore’s Army’ to prepare themselves for the battle ahead against Voldemort and his army that are getting closer. You’ll see emphasis of sacrifice, friendship, and loyalty between the characters of this film. The Order of the Phoenix was the first HP movie to be released in IMAX 3D and is the 17th highest-grossing film of all time.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Pictures and it had instant commercial success. Harry and his friends are now entering their sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. By this time, Lord Voldemort has a stronger hold on both the muggle and wizard worlds. Dumbledore then succeeds at persuading the retired Horace Slughorn to return as a potions teacher and take Harry under his wing. In this film, Harry also finds a mysterious book that is marked “This book is the property of the Half Blood Prince.” From this book, Harry is able to excel at potions class but also learns a few things that are dark and dangerous as well. In The Half-Blood Prince you will see Harry being taken into the past and learning more about Lord Voldemort’s dark past as a boy growing up. By doing this, he’ll be able to figure out Voldemort’s Achilles heel that will in turn help them to defeat the dark Lord. Among that happening, you’ll see the students at Hogwarts being bitten by the love bug and not focusing on the mission at hand. Harry and a guy named Dean Thomas are both trying to get the affections of a girl named Ginny who is also Ron’s sister, Ron is being pursued by a girl name Romilda Vane while his attention is on Lavender Brown, and Hermione is there trying to control her jealousy and bottling her emotions up. This fantasy film broke the record for being the biggest single-day worldwide gross of all time. It then broke the record for being the highest five-day worldwide gross in history. Upon its release, it became 8th highest grossing movie of all time, and second highest-grossing movie of 2009. This film also received many awards and nominations for its visual effects, cinematography, art direction etc. The Half-Blood Prince was positively reviewed by most critics and therefore is a great film to watch.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1

Pictures and was directed by David Yates. Deathly Hallows – Part 1 allows you to follow Harry, Ron, and Hermione as they go in search for Lord Voldemort’s Horcruxes. His Horcruxes are objects that store parts of Voldemort’s soul which he’s done so that in case his body is destroyed he is still alive and immortal. Lord Voldemort has hidden these Horcruxes in places far and wide, but if the three friends are able to find and destroy them, Voldemort will no longer be immortal. Voldemort’s power has strengthened, and now at this point, he’s in control over the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry, Ron, and Hermione must make sure everything goes as planned or else there is a lot to lose...their very lives and the lives of those around them. This part 1 finale film is the third highest-grossing of the series, eighth highest of all time, and had the highest opening of 2010. It is also the third highest-grossing film of 2010 and received two nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Art Direction at the 83rd Academy Awards. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2
