Living Room Furniture Selection

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

When deciding on living room furniture the first thing that you may have in your mind is the style of furniture. Do you want:

  • Antique living room furniture
  • Contemporary living room furniture
  • Formal living room furniture
  • Leather living room furniture
  • Modern living room furniture
  • Traditional living room furniture

But there are more things to consider than style of quality living room furniture.

What is the size and layout of the room?

In general pick large pieces of furniture for large room. If the room is deep, opt for long, elegant lines and accentuate the sense of never-ending space. Small and cozy rooms do well with small items. A small room can be made to seem larger by using a glass tables and using large mirrors on the wall.

How much sun shines into the room?

If you have abundant sunlight streaming into your living room most of the day, you will want to investigate furniture that is resistant to heat and UV. Sunlight will fade everything, so you want to find furniture immune to fading. Wood and glass are good choices. Be aware that metal may get hot in the sun, and plastic is highly likely to fade and may crack due to constant expansion and contraction. Use fade-resistant paint in a sunlit room.

If the sunlight is not constantly glaring into the room, it provides plenty of natural light. Any furniture looks good in a well-lit room. Light wood elicits a young and refreshing ambience. For a more chic look, select darker wood, metal or glass.

For a darker, dimly lit living room, you could try dark wood, wrought iron and colored glass tops. Then use white upholstery for a dramatic contrast.

Your Style and Color

Once you understand the size of your living room, you need to settle on style. You may already have a preference such as traditional or contemporary. Even if you do have a style in mind, let the room speak to you. You might just be surprised and choose a style different from what you though about initially.

One more thing to note: color! Are you planning to paint the walls, then wait until you get your furniture. Are you planning to replace your carpet? Then wait until you get your furniture. If you are not planning to do either one of those, get a swatch of carpet and a wall color sample to help you look for furniture.

So now you have the size and ambiance of your living room in mind, the style of living room furniture, and color palette, you are ready to shop. Search online to help narrow down your selection, then check out retail stores so that you can see the actual product. When you are ready, go for the best deal on your living room furniture.
