There are many forms of psychosis or psychological disorders and one of them is bipolar 2 which is one of the levels of bipolar disorder. When you are diagnosed with a bipolar disorder, such as bipolar 2, the symptoms will cause you to have some distress or you may experience some form of difficulties in one or more areas of your life such as your job or a relationship or other part of your personal life. With bipolar 2 disorder you will have at least one period of depression that is considered to be major. This might entail thoughts of suicide. You will also have had some form of a hypomanic episode.

Hypomania Versus Mania

Hypomania is literally below manic. When you experience hypomania you will be in a continuous state of euphoria which means a profound sense of well being which translates to feelings that you can do just about anything as you are in a state of extreme happiness or power. This state generally doesn’t interfere with your life and you are often extremely productive. It is believed that some renowned artists were bipolar and when in the bipolar 2 state created their best work. Mania is generally excessive emotions such as extreme restlessness or overwhelming confusion and being very irritable and not being super productive but instead may feel lost but unlikely to commit suicide.

How Have You Been Diagnosed?

When you have any form of bipolar disorder including bipolar 2 disorder you may never be diagnosed as having bipolar disorder. Then on the other hand you may be dating someone with bipolar disorder and if it is one of the lesser forms or only happens a few times a year then you may not notice that your date is considered bipolar. Also not every one understands exactly what bipolar is so if there is no description of it that you are aware of you may not recognize it. If you are bipolar and actually go through the manic and depression periods and you feel something is wrong with you then you should begin to keep an episode diary. Highlight the highs and lows for a period of time. Six months might be a good time frame for this diary.

Various Symptoms Of Bipolar Disorder

If you feel you are bipolar and have begun to keep a dairy of your moods after a while you may begin to see patterns especially if the manic stages disrupt your daily life. Since it the severity of the manic stage that determines the level of bipolarity it is important to note these symptoms. Some symptoms are distress, disruption and perhaps thoughts of suicide. In some people the depression and manic stages happens rapidly during the day. In others they may happen over a few days or weeks or may only occur a few times during the year. In some people the depression is the disruptive cycle in others the manic cycle is the worst. Some people have mixed episodes with complete normality in between.

Different Forms Of Bipolar Disorder

Each of the bipolar disorder levels like Bipolar 1, bipolar 2 and the third form usually referred to as Cyclothymic disorder have different and specific subcategories but there are some general explanations for each category of bipolar disorder. Cyclothymic disorder is a mild form of bipolar disorder. This form of bipolar disorder may cause some disruption in your life but it is not a severe form of bipolar disorder. This is one where it may never get diagnosed because it is never severe. Bipolar 1 is where you suffer from one or more manic episodes. This form causes severe disruption of your life and the various areas in it. The manic stage may be severe and dangerous and you may consider bipolar suicide.

Purposes Of Medications For Bipolar Disorder:

The purpose of medication for bipolar 2 is to stabilize the mood swings. The goal of anticonvulsants which act like a mood stabilizer is to suppress the rapid and excessive neuron firings that start a seizure. Anticonvulsants were originally used in epileptic seizures. Neurons are the nerve cell and all neurons are electronically excitable. The neurons process and transmit information by electrical and chemical signaling. Chemical signaling happens by synapses. Neurons connect to each other and form networks. Neurons are the core component of the body’s nervous system which is the brain, spinal cord and the ganglia. So the medications for bipolar disorder must work on the neurons.

Some Medications Used To Help Treat Bipolar Disorder

For the different forms of bipolar disorder including bipolar 2 disorder these are some of the medications prescribed. The anticonvulsants are considered mood stabilizers but actual medications that are mood stabilizers are antimanic agents. They will treat mania and mood cycling but do not treat the depression. One of the anticonvulsants is Depakote. When a person takes Depakote bipolar medications they are taking one of the newest approved medications for the treatment of bipolar disorders. It is good for manic management. The scientific name is divalproex sodium. Lamotrigine is a good drug for bipolar depression. Lithium is another medication which is an effective mood stabilizer drug and the first to be approved by the US government. It may reduce people considering bipolar suicide.
