Living in Bondi Beach, Sydney, Australia

By | Sep 8, 2009 | 2 Comments | Rating: 0
BondiBeach is on of Australia's best and most famous beaches. It is known as a backpacker and tourist mecca, with thousands of travellers flocking there each year to spend Christmas day at the beach. But it is also a place for local Australians to call home.

Living in Bondi Beach, Sydney is a very attractive, but expensive, option. It is located in the Eastern Suburbs, only seven kilometers from the city's Central Business District and it is a prime area for people to want to live. You can't beat the location right on the water and the fact that it's not too far from the city center makes it even more appealing.

But because it's a popular place and everyone's idea of what typical Sydney life should involve, it is expensive. A house share can be found in the suburb for upwards of $150 and that will mean sharing a room with one or possibly two other people. If you want a place to yourself, living in a studio or a bedsit will cost over $450 per week which expensive by any standard.

Average working class Sydney locals tend to live in either Bondi Junction or North Bondi and the beach is left to tourists, surfers and rich locals. The beach attracts people from all walks of life including topless sunbathers and people from all corners of the world. It's not uncommon to overhear various different accents and languages being spoken by visitors on the beach.

There's no shortage of nightlife options in BondiBeach with two of the most popular (and expensive) choices being the Beach Road Hotel and the Bondi Hotel. Bondi Icebergs located at the south end of the beach is popular with locals. For cheaper drinking options though your best bet is Bondi Junction which is a short bus ride away.

Bondi Junction is well-connected to Central Sydney by train and from there it is easy to get to BondiBeach by taking any of these bus lines: 380, 381, 382, and L82. Or the walk is 2 kilometers downhill to get to the beach.

Bondi Beach is packed with great places to eat and drink, especially if you're into seafood. It's well connected to Bondi Junction with a lot of great shopping and not far from Sydney's center. All of this comes at a price, though, and living in Bondi Beach is an expensive, but exciting option.
