Sydney is located in the Australian state of New South Wales and, despite popular belief, it is not the capital of the country (this honour goes to Canberra). Sydney is, however, the largest Australian city and is the centre of all the action. It is a hub for international flights and most visitors to Australia will arrive in Sydney.

Sydney life is busy by Australian standards, but pretty laid back when compared with life in North America or the UK. This is why many people make the move and decide that living in Sydney is for them. The city is has a great combination of urban hustle bustle natural beauty and is located right on one of the world's most stunning natural harbours that has been made even more beautiful by the famous Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.

Sydney is blessed with some of the best beaches in the world and that alone is a major reason why so many people make the city their home. Manly beach is reached by ferry but is still central and is a popular place for both residents and tourists. Bondi and Coogee beaches are two of the most popular in the city and are busy with locals and tourists all through the summer. Living right at the beach is expensive so most Sydneysiders make a commute to enjoy the sun, sand and surf. The point is that a good beach is never far away when you live in Sydney.

It isn't summer in Sydney year, round though and it actually gets pretty cold at times. It is in a temperate region which means it has four seasons but they aren't as defined as the seasons in the Northern Hemisphere. The summers range from 18 to 32 degrees which makes for perfect beach weather. In the winter the temperature is mild and can drop to 10 degrees over night but it is usually warm during the day.

Sydney is also the financial, trade, transport and cultural capital of Australia. It is home to the theatre, opera, fine dining, international restaurants galore, and the best shopping in the country. Sports are also a big deal here and the 2000 Olympics were heralded as one of the best ever. You can choose from rugby, Aussie Rules football, soccer, netball, basketball, cricket and all will have a great level of support from the sports-mad locals. Sydney is also the most multicultural city in Australia and people from all walks of life will feel comfortable here.

The quality of life is very high in Sydney and that is what makes it one of the top destinations for expatriates and students. They fall in love with Sydney's laid back charm and it is easy to see why.
