Locations and Ideas For Outdoor Wall Sconces

By | Jun 14, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0
Outdoor wall sconces are one of the most cost effective and attractive types of outdoor light fixtures that one can use for providing illumination for the great outdoors. Most times homeowners turn to more commercial looking options like spotlighting fixtures which give off a light that tends to wash out the attractiveness of gardens, decks, elegant walkways and the like.

Spotlights need to be well positioned for highlighting very specific areas of your home's exterior and not pointed hither dither so that they make your outer areas look a mess. An outdoor wall sconce is best used with bulbs that give off warmer light giving that look of elegance to the exterior.

Homeowners also get into a green phase and want to put an led light into every exterior light fixture. For one, LED bulbs that are reasonable in price do not output light in the warm color whites that are needed for the outdoors.

Human eyes have difficulty discerning details when using light leaning towards the blue spectrum. That's why you will notice that car headlights equipped with these xenon type bluish illumination look bright but are harder to see with than much dimmer yellow lights.

On the other hand they may go to the other extreme and not light their driveways and walkways except with those underpowered solar lights that you stick in the ground for ease and convenience. These types of lights that usually have an led light bulb in them rarely provide the intensity and color of light needed to even find your way to the door much less provide some kind of ambient light to showcase the beauty of a garden or hanging potted plants. Usually your walkway is bathed in this eerie blue light that is more reminiscent of the movie Twilight than anything else.

There is no reason to not have at least a single outdoor sconce on each outer wall of your home to provide some base level of illumination around the home periphery. These don't have to be elaborate decorative wall sconces but can be simple dual light emission fixtures that will light up your outer wall to the beginning of the roof and the down firing light will again bounce off the wall and illuminate your surrounding foliage.

This is of course assuming that you have an off white or light colored outer wall. If your outer wall is dark colored or is brownstone then your best bet is to get a fixture that will project light in an elegant way adding character to the rustic nature of a brownstone wall. There are many places online that you can shop for exterior wall sconces that will also provide some home lighting ideas on positioning outdoor sconce lights.
