Locking Mailbox

By Edited May 1, 2015 0 0

With identity theft on the rise all over the world in this time and age, it's important to have things like a locking mailbox to help protect you from thieves who will go through people's mailboxes to obtain personal information. Although having your information stolen isn't the end of the world, it can be a huge hassle and a headache to get everything back to normal. People have literally lost thousands of dollars and had their lives turned upside down for a while because of identity theft crimes. This article will be about the different locking mailboxes that are available and where you can find them. It will also give you some tips to further protect your identity from these thieves.

Depending on the type locking mailbox that you get, the cost will vary. Some of them are simple wall mounted ones with a key while others can be more elaborate and will even require you to enter a code. For the most part though, getting that uses a key is more than enough to discourage anyone from trying to get your personal information. Typically, you can expect to pay about $50 to $100 for a decent one. They can come in all sorts of sizes, colors, and designs. Whether you want one that goes on your wall near your front door or one that connects to the mail post on you front yard, you will be able to find what you need online.

Besides getting the right mailbox, there are some other things you will want to make sure you do as well. One of these things is when you throw things out like bank statement, bills, credit card offer letters, or just anything with your personal information on it, you will want to shred them up and put half of the shredding in a separate bag. Most of the time, people lose their identities because thieves will simply search through their garbage can looking for information that can be found on documents that people carelessly throw out without a second thought.

This may seem like an extreme thing to do but if you knew how easy it is for someone to get a bit of information on you and use it to purchase items that will be billed to you and wreck your credit, you may not think it's all that extreme. There was a show that investigated just this type of thing where they went around to people's garbage cans just to see what sort of information was easily available. They found all sorts of personal information that any thief could have used to make their life a lot more difficult. Fortunately, the people in the show were the good guys and even informed the people who had carelessly thrown out important information what could have happened if that information fell into the wrong hands.

Getting a locking mailbox may sound a bit much to most people but you can never be too safe when it comes to protecting your identity. Since most people don't have these types of mailboxes for their homes, it may not seem necessary but it's one of those things you will wish you had if you were to ever fall victim to one of these thieves. A little bit of caution can save you a lot of trouble and headache down the line.
