The first Archery competition took place in the Paris Olympic Games in the year 1990. The number of events was seven with different distances. The Olympic Games held in St. Louis in the year 1904 consisted of five archery events. It did not allow any non US athlete to participate in the events. The Summer Olympics held in the year 1908 had three events of archery. The archery competitions were not included in the Olympic Games conducted during the period of 1920 to 1972. The archery competition conducted in the 1972 Summer Olympics included two events such as Women's Individual and Men's Individual.

The modern archery competition was started in the 1972 Olympic Games. Standard methods were carried out and several countries were allowed to participate. Qualification spots were assigned to the committees of the National Olympics. NOCs can follow four methods to receive berths in Olympic archery. Three archers can be entered by a single NOC of each gender. Each gender is assigned three spots by the host nation. This sports consist of four medal events including Men's individual, Men's team, Women's team and Women's individual. The distance between the archers to the target is 70 meters in all the events. London 2012 Olympics includes archery competition also. This competition is scheduled from July 28th to August 4th in the Lord's cricket ground. The numbers of participants are 128 athletes competing in four events.

Individual archery competitions allow 64 archers to participate. The first round is ranking. A single archer shoots 72 arrows. The archers will be ranked based on their scores. The final ranking will be made depending on the round in which the archer was defeated. For example: the archers who are defeated in the first round receive a ranking of 33 through 64. The first round pits the archer with the first rank against the 64th and the archer holding the second rank against the 63rd. This process will be continued. The archers need to shoot eighteen arrows continuously. The archer who receives the higher score after shooting the eighteen arrows will be eligible for the next round and the loser will not move the next level. After the completion of three rounds of elimination, eight archers will remain. The last three rounds are called as the final rounds. The final three rounds are quarterfinals, semifinals and medal matches.

Each nation includes three archers in the individual and the team competitions. The scores received by the players in the individual ranking round will be included in the evaluation of ranking round score of the team also. The Olympic archers use the recurve bow method. Shooting an arrow by this bow makes the arrow to travel at a speed of over 150 mph. This bow is produced with high technology from the materials like fiberglass, graphite and wood. It helps the archers to aim perfectly as it contains stabilizers with it. Hydrocarbon or Kevlar are used for producing the strings. The arrows are produced from carbon graphite or aluminum materials. Karen Scavotto is one of the most renowned archery players and she has joined the US Olympian archery team including Janet Dykman and Denise Parker to win a medal.

I have always enjoyed trying my hand at archery. Thanks for the in depth info. 72 arrows each for ranking? That is a lot of shooting!
