Shrimp is a delicious seafood. The shrimp is available all year round.
The peak season for shrimp is August thru December. Shrimp are nutritous and are an excellent source of minerals. The shrimp contains calicum,phosphorous,sulpher,copper and are high in iodine. If you are watching your weight the shrimp is low in fat.
Shrimp can be brought at your local fish market or the seafood section in your local grocery store. Before buying your shrimp to cook check them for freshness. The shrimp should have a tight fitting shell. Smell the shrimp if there is an ammonia odor it is not fresh.
Always wash the shrimp under cold water ,remove the shell and devine it before cooking, To remove the vein on the back of the shrimp use a small knife to slit open the back and slide the vein out.
There are many wonderful tasty shrimp recipes. Here a couple of good ones to try.
Beer Batter Shrimp
1 1/2 lb. Large raw shrimp,vegetable oil, 1 cup self- rising flour, 1 tsp.salt and 1 tsp.pepper ,1 egg beaten and some stale beer.
In a bowl combine flour,salt,pepper,egg and add in the beer. Let this sit at room temperature for 1 hour. Then batter the shrimp. Heat up the oil and fry until golden brown. Put paper towels on a plate to help absorb the oil. Put the shrimp on this plate after frying.
1 lb. Large shrimp ,1/3 cup half butter and half vegetable oil,2 Tbsp minced celery , 2 Tsp.minced onions, 1 glove minced garlic,1/3 cup water,2 Tbsp lemon juice,1/3 cup tomato paste and 1 tsp salt and 1 tsp.pepper. Stir fry the celery,onion,garlic in the butter and oil until tender.Add the remaining ingredients. Cook 5 minutes more and the shrimp are done.
Of course ,shrimp are delicious boiled with some Old Bay added for flavor. Then just peel and eat them. Dip them in tartar sauce or seafood sauce. Serve with coleslaw or a salad for a quick delicious meal.
