Caring for Elderly Parents Near or Far? Here's a Thoughtful and Personal Gift Just for Them

Whether You Buy Digital Picture Photo Frames or Convert a Computer To A Digital Picture Viewer, Your Sweet Seniors Will Love It!

Mother's Day is soon, Father's Day is right around the corner, and, of course, birthdays happen all year round. Not only that, Christmas seems to be wearing speed skates in our family. We blink and it's back already! In other words, it's never too early to start planning your gift list and that's especially true if you are shopping for the elderly parents and relatives in your family who always say they don't need anything. Because, of course, you still want to get them something special. Here's a sweet way to do it. Give them a digital picture viewer frame with your family photos already loaded into it.

There's a couple of ways to do this. You can take the easy way and buy it. With a little research you can find a great digital picture viewer and then load it up by adding photos from the last few years into the permanent memory. (You might also want to add even more photos to a smart card and pop that in too. That way, if one fails,  the other should keep working without your special senior having to worry about it.) This makes a wonderful gift full of your sweet family memories AND you can keep giving more pictures through the years. As the expression goes, it's the gift that keeps on giving.

The second method is one of those practical and creative ways to save some money but first, do make sure  your family member has plenty of room. Take an older model computer and monitor and turn it into a budget-friendly digital picture viewer. Just erase everything from the hard drive, upload all the photos you want, and set the screen saver to slide show. Place the computer where your elderly relative would like it to be, plug it in, and put it in screen saver mode. If you don't live nearby, be sure to type out the instructions for restarting it after a power outage - leave a copy with them and keep a copy in your own computer to read to them, in case they lose theirs.

These converted digital photo viewers are especially nice as they are larger - like watching a TV. Those computers often have plenty of memory but are such old technology, nothing else may work on it. However, they usually play the screen saver wonderfully and your senior parents can enjoy eating a pleasant lunch or dinner in front of their "personalized TV show of sweet family memories " as they slowly fade in and out on the screen.

If you invest in an easy to use digital camera you can keep taking more photos each year, add the new pictures to the photo viewer (maybe taking older ones off if you start getting low on memory) and they can enjoy fresh new "shows" periodically. These personalized gifts can be especially nice for those baby boomers caring for the elderly parents in their own home who may have to travel. They can enjoy seeing the caregiver on the screen, along with other family members, and may not miss their loved one quite as much when they have to be gone.

Whether you buy brand new digital picture photo frames or create a simple digital picture viewer using an old computer, you'll have wonderful gifts for the elderly relatives in your life that will delight them for years to come with the sweet family memories they can easily enjoy.
