Looking for a Great Workout Drink - Try Whey Protein Powder
What is Whey Protein Powder?
Basically whey is one of two proteins that make up the total protein content of milk. The other protein being casein. Whey protein constitutes about 20% of milk protein while casein makes up the other 80%. Both these proteins are extracted and turned into protein powder supplements. So why has whey protein powder become considerably more popular than casein protein powder?
This is due to two main reasons -
1) Whey protein is the highest scoring protein on something called the "BV scale". BV is an abbreviation for biological value which measures the bio-availability of different protein sources. The BV charts how well different protein food sources are absorbed into the muscles and other tissue for recovery and repair. So the higher the BV rating the better it is for growing and strengthening muscles. Here is an example of the BV value of some proteins BV Values:
Whey Protein Isolate = 159
Whey Protein Concentrate = 104
Eggs whole = 100
Cow milk: 91
Beef: 80
Chicken / Turkey = 79
Casein: 77
As you can see from the chart, whey protein is the protein source with the highest biological value of all. When the BV of foods was first charted, eggs where the food source with the highest BV and given the value of 100 as a standard by which all foods are compared.
2) Whey protein is the most easily digestible protein around. This makes it an excellent choice as a pre and post workout snack. It is very light on the digestion and wont weigh you down in the way other proteins can, so that makes whey the ideal protein choice for a pre-workout snack. Also, because of its speed of digestion it will reach the muscles more quickly than other proteins. This is great for supplying your starving muscles with the protein they need immediately after a workout! So that also makes whey the perfect post-workout protein!
