Maintain Healthy Eyes to Avoid Losing Your Vision

By | Nov 15, 2010 | 1 Comments | Rating: 0

Most of us take our vision for granted. We wake up each morning and rub the sleep out of our eyes and begin the day looking at the beautiful morning. Even staring into our morning cup of coffee and reading the newspaper to start our day, becomes routing. But how much of our daily life would change if we did not have our eyesight. Maintaining healthy eyes can prevent problems. Early detection of problems like glaucoma and macular degeneration can reduce the likelihood of vision loss.

The American Optometric Association recommends that people wear sunglasses whenever they are out in sunlight. It doesn't matter if it is a cloudy day or not, ultraviolet rays are harmful to your eyes. They suggest wearing sunglasses that screen out between 75 and 90% of visible light. The sunglasses should be free of imperfections and distortions. Gray lenses seem to give the wearer the best color recognition.

Make sure to have regular eye examinations. Early diagnosis of glaucoma and macular degeneration can be followed by proper treatment to slow down the advancement of the diseases. Visit an ophthalmologist or an optometrist regularly.

Any time you experience flashing lights, floaters or gray shadows in your field of vision you should see an ophthalmologist. Most problems with the eye are painless, therefore any immediate pain should be a reason to visit the doctor. Pain could be a result of a foreign object that has lodged in the eye area and is causing damage to the cornea or a possible infection.

Any sudden change in your vision should be a reason to see the doctor. Most vision changes are gradual. A sudden loss of vision could be as a result of a fluid leak or blood under retina, which would need immediate medical attention.

Foreign objects can get trapped in the eye, when you are outside during any activity. This is another reason to wear sunglasses or other protective goggle if working inside where there are objects in the air. If you are working in a lab or construction area or on an athletic field, where particles could blow into your eyes it is important to wear protective eyewear.

Should you see any redness or discoloration of the eye.

Blurred vision could be an indication of a problem with the carotid artery. The carotid artery supplies blood to the eyes and if there is any kind of problem it could start as blurred vision and should be discussed with a medical professional as soon as possible.

Include in your diet foods that are high in carotenoids. Carotenoids are not just found in carrots. They are plentiful in other vegetables as well, like kal, collard greens, spinach, turnip greens and broccoli. Add more foods high in antioxidants to your diet as well to combat age related eye disease and cataracts. Antioxidants can be found in papaya, cantaloupe, strawberries, green peppers, oranges and grapefruit.

Maintaining healthy eyes and your vision means having a partnership with good nutrition, common sense, and regular check ups with your eye physician.
