Making Your Own Kitchen Tier Curtains

By | Aug 23, 2010 | 1 Comments | Rating: 0

If you are able to sew a little you may want to look into making your own kitchen curtains. Many people do not want to spend a lot of money on kitchen curtains mainly because they do tend to need replacing much sooner than curtains hung in other areas of the home. They become soiled much more quickly and can also absorb grease and oil as well. Sewing your own curtains is a great way to save money, yet still have your kitchen nicely decorated.

When it comes to curtains kitchen curtains especially, there are many different styles to choose from. You can hang café curtains, eyelet curtains, regular curtains with tiebacks or tier curtains. Tier curtains are often a favorite when it comes to kitchen curtains, mainly because they just look like they are meant to belong in a kitchen. Tier curtains are in two levels. One layer stretches across the window, hanging from around the middle of the window down to the bottom sill. The second tier or layer stretches across the top of the window from one side to the other, either a small straight piece that is around six to eight inches long, or a piece that is longer on each side.

There are many different designs of tier curtains. The easiest to sew yourself is the type that are straight, rather than tapering down at the sides. Of course, if you have a pattern and you are able to follow it then you should not have any trouble with whatever you choose. However, if you are simply planning on sitting down one afternoon to sew some new kitchen eyelet curtains you may find it is easiest to go with the style that is straight across both top and bottom.

Find two pieces of matching material and cut it to the length and width desired. You will probably want to allow extra as far as width goes so that the curtains can hang with small folds in them. Sew the hem at the bottom top and sides of the pieces, leaving enough room at the top to thread either curtain wire or a curtain pole through. It is usually best to string curtain wire across the mid section of the window as that is far less noticeable than a pole and requires much less fitting.

It really is extremely easy to sew your own kitchen tier curtains, even if you are not an extremely accomplished seamstress. Basically, as long as you can sew a straight line with a sewing machine you should be able to make and hang your own curtains easily in an afternoon, depending of course on how many windows you are sewing curtains for.
