Monetizing your blog

There is lots of advice out there on how to start your own blog, but as I started blogging, I started to learn from experience that there are a lot of things that they don't all cover. Things such as...

  1. Passion
This is extremely important in choosing a topic to blog about. This is the most important part; it determines how much time and energy you are able to devote to your project. Trust me, you don't want to get stuck writing about something that you don't like, day after day, week after week. Also, the level of passion you have for the topic that you are writing about will determine the quality of your content, which brings me to our next point.

  2. Quality content
They say that on the internet, content is king. And since the internet is so full of content, you can't just throw just any content out there and expect to be successful; it needs to have quality to stand out. The better your content is, the more people will share your posts with friends. The more they share your posts, the bigger your chances of growing an audience.

As I said before, in order to have quality content, you need to be passionate about the topic that you are writing about. When you write from the heart, the better your writing will be, and the easier the words will flow. Don't fool yourself into writing something just because it's a popular topic, and you will gain a bigger audience; if your writing sucks because of low quality, you'll have NO audience. This is one case where you want to follow your emotions rather than logic, because the more emotionally attached you are to something, the more you will enjoy writing about it. And the more you enjoy writing about it, the better the quality of your writing!

  3. Care about your readers
This kinds goes back the the quality of your writing, but I'm writing it as a separate point in order to emphasize it. Caring about your readers means not just putting together an article merely for the sake of having an article. It means to write in such a way that you benefit your reader as much as you possibly could. I care about my readers. I want to make sure that anyone who reads this can go and start a successful blog. And that's why I go into detail about all of the important steps and all of the things that my reader would have to take into consideration before starting a blog.

This may seem like a lot, but remember that many writers out there do not follow this advice. So many times have I read something and not come out with any practical information that could help me. If you care about your readers, you will stand out, and you will have a huge advantage over many other writers. After all, if you're writing about something you are passionate about, this shouldn't be too hard.

A wise man once said, that words spoken from the heart, reaches the heart, but words spoken by the lips do not get past the ears. I beleive the same is true for writing.

  4. Start small
If you're serious about starting a blog, and eventually want to become a full time blogger, you'll eventually want to buy your own domain name, have your own web site and brand name. Which is great. But if you're like me, and haven't been writing a lot lately (but still insist that you enjoy writing) then you might want to start smaller, just to get into the habit of it before you make any serious commitments. I would suggest starting off writing for infobarrel, at least for a few weeks. It's almost the same as what you'd be doing with a real blog: Writing, posting, making money off of ads. Everything you'd be doing with your own blog, minus the hassle of having to manage your web site. Trust me, I've tried it before, and it is very time-comsuming. I barely had time to write, which is what I had originally set out to do!

  5. Read, read, read!
Basically, you'll need to do research on a couple of things, because it's not realistic for me to cover EVERYTHING here. You don't absolutely have to know this to be a good blogger, but you'll need it if you want your blog to become popular. You want your blog to become popular, don't you?

You'll need to know the basics about branding and marketing. Branding is important because you need to create an identity for yourself. Marketing is basically how you are going to make your blog famous. You'll also need to know about how to use social media to promote your blog. Knowing search engine optimization also helps, but if that sounds too scary, don't worry about that right now.

But don't just read to do research for your blog. It's important for any writer to just read a lot on general. Pay attention to articles that you end up liking. What do they do differently? And how can you apply that to your own writing?

Above all, I'll warn you that it isn't as easy as it may seem. It's like an emotional rollercoaster... one day you might write a long, well-thought out post that doesn't get any response. The next day you might get lots of positive feedback from a one-liner that you barely gave any thought to. But as I've said before, if you're passionate about what you're writing, then the writing process is a reward in and of itself.
