Managing an irregular period

Although most medical textbooks define a woman's menstrual cycle as 28 days, many women experience an irregular period. Here are some tips to help you manage an irregular menstrual cycle.

Always carry an emergency stash of tampons or pads with you. The easiest way to do this is to keep them in a zippered pouch inside your purse. That way, even if your period arrives unexpectedly, you are prepared and you won't have to rush home.

Although irregular periods do not occur like clockwork, sometimes they will follow a pattern of beginning within a certain set of days each month. To better understand your irregular periods, use a small pocket calendar to track the start dates of your period each month. If you notice that they seem to begin during a certain time frame, you can be better prepared.

If you are a teenager who is just beginning to menstruate, just give your body time to develop and get into an established routine. Many teens experience an irregular period that becomes more predictable as they mature.

Lastly, make sure that the cause of your irregular period is not due to an unhealthy diet or extreme weight loss. Both of these factors can contribute to irregular periods. Make sure that you are eating enough healthy fats in your diet like almonds, and fish so that your body is health enough to menstruate.
