If you love superhero movies, but are not a big reader of comic books then you may be wondering who some of the characters getting on the big screen within the next few years are. Not everyone knows much more about these characters than what the movie gives them. Unfortunately the movies do not always represent a character the way they were actually portrayed in the comic books, but knowing about them can only help. It is always good to have at least some basic knowledge of the characters so that you can care a bit more about their story and how they fit in the Marvel Universe. Here are some characters you will soon see on the silver screen.

Guardians Of The Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy

The Guardians of the Galaxy are not a big name in comic books and even some hardcore fans could not tell you much about the team; yet they will have a movie released in the summer of 2014. The team has included several human and alien heroes depending on the timeline, but some of the more important ones and the ones that you are likely to see in the movie are Peter Quill (Star-Lord), Gamora, Quasar, Groot, Mantis, Rocket Racoon, Drax the Destroyer and Adam Warlock.

When you look at the team it is obvious that they are not all humans; none of them are actually humans in the full sense with Star-Lord and Adam Warlock being the closest in the team to being human (Star-Lord is human, alien and cyborg while Adam Warlock is actually a synthetic being). The movie will probably introduce Thanos to the picture; he was also in the after credits scene of the Avengers movie and it is one of the worse villains in the Marvel Universe. To prepare for the Guardians of the Galaxy movie you can read “The Thanos Imperative” comic books.

The Falcon

The Falcon will not have his own movie, but he will be in the Captain America: The Winter Soldier movie due to be released in April of 2014. The Falcon or Sam Wilson is not one of the most known characters to those who do not read comic books, but he has become a sidekick of sorts to Captain America and he is also one of the main characters in the Avengers Assemble cartoon show.

Sam Wilson is a Harlem native whose dad was killed trying to break up a fight in his rough neighborhood. Two years after the death of his father, his mother suffered the same fate when a mugger killed her as she was on her way back home. Sam became a volunteer and was in a plane crash after which he was given the power to communicate with birds by the Red Skull who used the Cosmic Cube. The idea was that the Falcon could eventually fight and defeat Captain America, but once Cap got Sam out of the control of the Skull they joined forces to beat their nemesis.

Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver

Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver

The mutant siblings will be on the 2nd Avengers movie, but Quicksilver will be making his début on X-Men Days of Future Past. There are a few things that you should know about these brother and sister duo. They are Magneto’s kids and mutants which started with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants on the X-Men #4 comic book, but soon after that they turned and actually became Avengers.

The Scarlet Witch or Wanda Maximoff can control chance. There is a lot to explain about how she does it, so instead I will tell you what that actually means. Wanda can alter reality and probability fields, but since her power is so different it looks almost like magic. She can quickly start a fire, melt guns, decay any organic material. She had sorcerer training and in one case she actually altered reality enough that she changed everything that was taking place in the universe.

Quicksilver is the younger of the siblings and his mutant ability is that he can run really fast (the speed of sound), but he has been able to go 5 times faster than that when he was exposed to the HEIE (High-Evolutionary Isotope E) which meant he could run out gravity and that allowed him to run up walls and on water.

Because of movie rights both Marvel and Fox are able to use the characters in a movie, but Marvel will not mention in the Avengers 2 movie that Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch are mutants, nor that they are Magneto’s kids, but at least now you know. Some of the comic books you need to get to understand these two characters are Avengers' “New Beginnings”, “The House of M” saga and “Son of M”.

Doctor Strange

Dr Strange

The Doctor Strange movie will more than likely happen after Avengers 2, but a lot of comic book fans are already anxious. Doctor Strange is the “Sorcerer Supreme” in the Marvel Universe. Stephen Strange was a gifted yet egocentric surgeon (think of him as the Marvel version of House) who was in a car accident leaving him unable to use his hands. Stephen saw that his career as a surgeon was over. Strange did not want to become an assistant or consultant so he looked for anything that could help him get use of his hands again and that is how he met the Ancient One. In Tibet the Ancient One refused to heal Stephen's hands, but due to an attack he decided that Strange could learn the Mystic Arts.

Doctor Strange is known as a sorcerer with great power. He uses incantations and spells to manipulate the force of the universe. There are no cheap tricks in his arsenal, and he fights a lot of the evil entities that other heroes cannot. Strange uses his powers and several artifacts which have been given to him such as the Eye of Agamotto which increases his mystical abilities, and protects him from harm. The Eye of Agamotto is very similar to Thor’s hammer because it can only be used by the heroes the eye deems worthy of its power.

Some of the best story arcs that you can read to get to know Doctor Strange are "Sorcerer Supreme and Defenders" and the "Infinity Gauntlet".

More movies from Marvel will be coming out soon, so look for part 2 of this article for other heroes you might see.
