Massage Techniques

Massage has long since provided relief and relaxation to people of all ages (from babies to senior citizens) as well as a wide variety of conditions and ailments. There is a certain healing power in touch of the hand. After a massage, people leave calm and with a heightened sense of relaxation and well being.

Here are some of the basic massage strokes:

1. Circular stroking: The hand moves in one full circle, and at the same time, the other hand provides a half-circular motion. This is usually used for the back muscles.

2. Fan stroking: The fingers fan out from the side of the body upwards and downwards repeatedly, with the pressure given by leaning directly over the area.

3. Kneading: The palms and the fingers do a kneading motion on the muscle, especially the fleshy areas. When you are applying this, imagine yourself holding a piece of dough and kneading it.

4. Thumb stroking: The thumbs are used to provide upward and alternating strokes. This is usually used on the neck and other small areas.

5. Circular pressure: This is a variation of thumb stroking, only now the movements are circular. The pressure is gradually increased until it is time to move on to the next area.

6. Static pressure: This is marked by a press-hold-release pattern. To remove the tension from the feet, shoulders, back and neck, the thumps and fingers apply pressure on the area. The pressure is held for some ten seconds and then released.

7. Knuckling: As the name suggests, it uses the knuckles to apply pressure. The knuckles are placed in the feet, the palm, the chest or shoulders and then a rotating motion is applied.

While giving the massage, be sure to be sensitive to the person's reaction. He or she might find the pressure too hard or too light. Ask if you are applying the right amount of pressure. Also, ask where the pressure is best concentrated. A specific area may be tense and will need more attention. Encourage the person to breathe deeply so that he or she will enjoy the full effects of the massage. If it is possible, make use of aromatic oils, as these also contribute to a healing or relaxing effect.
