Charlie Price has just inherited his father’s failing shoe factory in conservative working class Northampton, England. Faced with financial ruin and having to layoff his employees, and thus squelching the town’s livelihood, Charlie comes up with a plan to save the factory.

After a chance meeting with Lola, who is a transvestite, Charlie and Lola begin working on designing thigh-high women’s shoes that men can wear instead of the staid and sensible brogues the factory formerly produced for generations. The film is funny, touching and inspiring.

Chewitel Ejiofer, in particular, shines in this movie as the flamboyant cross-dressing cabaret singer. Aside from Ejiofer's outstanding performance, movie viewers of this film will come to care about all of the identifiable characters and their predicaments. It is hard not to cheer them on before the film concludes.
