The New Forest pony has had more infusions of outside blood than any other of the British mountain and moorland breeds. They now range from 12 to 14 hands. Bay and brown are the most common colours. Because their native country consists mostly of heather, the ponies show a predisposition to canter rather than trot. Heather moors are more easily traversed at a canter.
