Medical assistant duties are defined by their work place: doctors offices and clinics. Even though they work with other medical professionals, their duties are not like that of a licensed practical nurses or registered nurses. Medical assistant duties are more limited.

In small practices, assistants usually do many different kinds of tasks. These tasks include administrative duties and clinical duties. The assistants usually report directly to an office manager, physician, or other health practitioner.

In larger practices the duties are generally not as varied as in a small practice. In a larger practic, duties tend to be specialized for all individuals, so the assistant will not have the breadth of work. The assisant also may report to a superviser instead of a manager or the physician.

Medical assistant duties consist of the various office duties needed to run the doctor's clinic and office on a day-to-day basis. These activites include organizing charts, coding charts, preparing charts for use in the clinic and filing. Laboratory procedures are other duties that the assistant may perform. Laboratory duties include collecting specimens, preparing injections and administering injections. Answering telephones is an additional opportunity for patient involvement. The assistant answers the phone, talks to the patient and assesses their needs. Then the assitant addressing the patients needs directly, or referring them on.

Ulitmately the duties you will perform as a medical assitant depends on what your supervisor, and supervising physician, feel comfortable assigning you. But you cannot practice medicine. Your duties are limited by state laws

The medical assistant profession is growing daily as people realize that medical offices and clinics have needs to assist physicians outside of nursing. More people are learning medical assistant duties from schools.
