Medical Tourism in Costa Rica: Cosmetic Dentistry

By | Dec 9, 2011 | 1 Comments | Rating: 1

When you think about cosmetic dental procedures like veneers, caps, and whitening, you probably don't have any particular place in mind other than the dentist's chair.  But, if your dental insurance doesn't cover non-essential procedures, you should consider the possibilities of seeking dental work abroad.  South of the border, one of the most popular destinations for lower cost dental care is Costa Rica.

Like many Latin American countries, a favorable exchange rate and a lower cost of medical care means that you can make your teeth look like movie star's on a non-celebrity budget.

Will I be able to find a highly qualified and experienced cosmetic dentist in Costa Rica?

You can most definitely find many dentists with credentials and experience who meet your needs.  Because cosmetic procedures are popular among Latin Americans, and because Costa Rica draws so many medical tourists from overseas, there is a healthy supply of doctors and dentists to meet the demand.   Whether you book an appointment independently or through a medical tourism company, you'll find the widest selection of dentists in capital city of San José.

Costa Rica has the highest human development index among Latin American countries, dental clinics are clean and modern, and dental school and medical licensing requirements are rigorous.

What procedures are available?

Any cosmetic dental procedure that you can get in the US you can get in Costa Rica.  The most popular treatments for teeth are veneers, whitening, crowns, caps, and dental implants.  You can also get fillings, root canals, wisdom tooth extraction, and porcelain inlays. If you need an operation that requires general anesthesia and possibly bone grafts (such as sinus augmentation), there are many highly qualified maxillo-facial and dental surgeons available as well.

What are the typical costs?

Crowns and veneers which usually cost $2,000 - $3,000 USD only cost about $500 USD in Costa Rica.  More in-depth surgeries which cost $7,500 - $1,0000 USD may cost around $1,000 - $2,000 USD in Costa Rica.   Minor procedures like fillings and bleaching are incredibly inexpensive.

If you already plan to travel to Costa Rica for business or pleasure, and you've been thinking about getting your teeth done, you might as well combine trips and get your cosmetic enhancements done in Costa Rica.

What are sites to See in Costa Rica?

Since cosmetic dental procedures require little recovery time, many medical tourists take the chance to explore the natural wonder of Costa Rica.  Costa Rica has beautiful beaches, volcanos, and ecologically diverse forests bursting with amazing plant and animal life.  One of the most popular activities is taking a canopy tour over the jungle.  For the more adventurous there is scuba diving and bungee jumping. Arts and architecture in the capital are another facet to explore.
