Details of the Medifast Diet Program
Is This Weight Loss Plan Effective?
The Medifast Diet Program is an extremely low calorie diet, which is based on consuming six meals per day. This weight loss program isn't dependent on counting calories, carbs, or exercising for a required amount of time. The primary Medifast Diet Program is known as "5 plus 1", which includes 5 meal replacement drinks or foods along with one "lean and green" meal per day. This is a high protein, low carbohydrate weight loss program that should only be done under the care of a doctor.
5 Plus 1
As I previously mentioned, the primary Medifast Diet Program is called 5 Plus 1. All of the meal replacement drinks and foods for this program are available through the company website. This includes portion controlled shakes, eggs, pudding, oatmeal, soups, bars, or chili. According to WebMD, soy and protein are the basis of the meal replacements. They are designed to help dieters feel satisfied on this low-calorie diet. The meal replacement items alone cost around $80 per week.
The 1 “lean and green” meal is made up of lean meat or fish, along with three servings of vegetables. This meal is broken down into three specific categories, which are lean, leaner and leanest. The meats and fish included in the Medifast Diet Program can be grilled, poached, broiled, baked, or boiled. The "green" portion of the meal consists of either salad or vegetables. Vegetables that are higher in carbohydrates are removed from this weight reduction program. As you can see, fruits and dairy products, which include many healthy food options, are not included.
What really stood out to me with the Medifast Diet Program is that the dieters consume around 800 to 1,000 calories per day. That is a very low number in terms of caloric intake. The average person takes in around 2,000 calories per day. Also, because their caloric intake is so low, people on this diet should limit how much they exercise. I'm assuming most people on this program literally don't have the energy to exercise, because of how little they are eating.
When participating in the Medifast Diet Program, you are allowed to drink zero calorie beverages. This includes water, tea, diet soda, coffee and basically whatever beverages you can find that don't have any calories. Also, you can only have three servings of caffeine per day. Dieters should try and drink plenty of liquids throughout the day, which may help if they are feeling hungry.
Purpose of the Medifast Diet Program
Personally, I would be hesitant to try the Medifast Diet Program. The company can claim that the meal replacements won't leave you feeling hungry, but that is hard to believe, since you're eating less than 1,000 calories per day. I like to follow the plan of eating healthy foods and exercising on a regular basis. However, I know this does not work for everyone. Many people have problems sticking to diets or motivating themselves to exercise regularly. The Medifast Diet Program has been around for over 25 years, so their plan does work. Each person has to do their research and decide if this diet solution is right for them. You also have factor in the costs of the meal replacement food and drinks. If you decide to give this program a try, I would strongly recommend consulting a doctor first.
