Memory Foam Mattress Toppers Buyer's Guide

By Edited Oct 27, 2013 0 0

If you feel your bed is too firm or your mattress is simply uncomfortable you might want to consider purchasing a memory foam mattress topper. The pad is placed right on top of your current mattress. One major benefit of memory foam mattress toppers is that you don't have to spend tons of money on a new mattress if you don't like the way it feels. These toppers can also be used as a portable bed for camping and make sleeping on hard surfaces a bit more cozy.

Unlike other mattress toppers which are filled with feathers, memory foam toppers are constructed with a polyurethane material that is designed to conform to your body. Most toppers are between 1 and 3 inches thick and range in price between $50 and $1000 dollars depending on the size of your mattress. Yes, that's a pretty extensive range! Feather toppers are usually a bit thicker than the foam ones and are less expensive, ranging up to around $150 for a king size. However, many people who own feather mattress toppers often complain that the feathers continually poke them which hardly makes for a restful sleep.

There are several brands of foam toppers to choose from including those sold by Walmart (Spa Sensations), Target, Bed Bath and Beyond (Isotonic), Select Comfort, and Tempur-Pedic. It seems that price doesn't play a big factor in terms of quality of comfort. One person who slept on the most expensive brand, Tempur-Pedic, said it was sleeping in quicksand. However, just like mattresses, no one topper is going to be best for everyone since comfort is a very subjective consideration.

One problem associated with memory form mattress toppers is odor although the strong scent of rubber will often fade with time. If you do decide to purchase one it may be a good idea to let it air out for a couple days before putting it on your bed. If you're not sure whether or not you're going to like the topper make sure to check the return policy. Some retailers don't allow returns because of the unwieldly nature of memory foam once its taken out of the original package. Unlike mattresses, toppers can't be tested in the store which can make the buying decision a bit more difficult.

Before you purchase a topper for your mattress its also a good idea to check the height of the topper to make sure your sheets will still fit. Sheets are very expensive and all it takes is just a couple inches or two to make them usable.
