Along with the many symptoms of menopause also can come menopause depression. Knowing that you are having depression symptoms is the first step to getting some relief from that. Although the instances of women in menopause suffering from depression are low, it is a big issue for these women.

Why do women suffer from menopause depression or menopause mood swings? That is still up in the air. Many believe that it is the shear stress of the symptoms associated with menopause that pushes women into menopause mood swings and depression. Another thought is that menopause depression is related to the constant ups and downs of the hormone levels in the body. The inconsistency in these levels may just cause these women to the breaking point.

How to Treat Menopause Depression

There are several ways that menopause depression is treated. One option is estrogen therapy. This is essentially the introduction of estrogen supplements into the system to attempt to bring up the estrogen levels and create a happier mood. This is a fairly new therapy option.

Another option is antidepressants. There are a number of antidepressants that can be used to counter act the "bad moods" associated with the menopause. One of these antidepressants is Selected Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). This medication increases the serotonin levels in the brain to regulate the mood level.

And still another option is psychotherapy. This is meetings with a psychologist or psychiatrist to help work out some of the negative feelings the menopausal woman is going through. This can be very effective either on its own or with a combination of medication.

Other Menopause Help – Including Herbal Remedies for Menopause

Caffeine in excess can cause many similar symptoms and reducing the amount of caffeine ingested daily can help with some of these symptoms. If you are an avid coffee drinker you see a difference fairly quickly.

Alcohol can make the symptoms worse. To alleviate some of these symptoms reduce your alcohol intake. You can replace your alcoholic beverage with something like a frozen fruit juice or perhaps cranberry juice with seltzer and ice in a frosty glass. Don't forget the long straw.

There are some herbal remedies said to be helpful with the symptoms of menopause such as Agnus Castus, aka chaste berry. Another potentially helpful herb is milk thistle and this helps with the hormonal changes. You might consider black cohosh for hot flashes and mood swings. A stress reliever that could be helpful during menopause is theanine. All of these herbal remedies for menopause are said to help menopause relief and are a great alternative to prescription medications.

When considering herbal remedies for menopause symptoms be sure to talk with your physician as on some occasions herbs and supplements can have an adverse affect on medications that you might be taken. Additionally, they can on occasion, cause aggravation of other conditions.

Seek Menopause Help from Your Doctor

If you are feeling any early menopause symptoms or think you may be suffering from menopause depression such as feeling tired or having a feeling of dread or despair, see a physician immediately. Do not wait and think that you are troubling anyone with this problem. There is help out there for everyone who may be experiencing menopause depression. It is important to take the time to have a conversation with your physician before you begin treatment. Remember it is the beginning of a new time in your life, not the end.
