Mesothelioma in Dogs
Many have heard of mesothelioma, the fatal cancer caused by a person working with or around asbestos. This cancer is one of the most deadly of all cancers and is commonly known. What isn't commonly known is that mesothelioma can be found in dogs as well as humans.
Humans will often be diagnosed with this cancer decades after they may have come into contact with asbestos but the average age of diagnosis of mesothelioma in dogs is about 8 years old. Mesothelioma in dogs can occur because a family member has brought asbestos or asbestos dust into an area the dog frequents or if the dog roams and spends time in a building no longer in use.
There are several symptoms of mesothelioma in dogs. These symptoms include, difficulty breathing, coughing, dog not sleeping because of coughing or breathing problems, not eating, and trouble being as active as they usually are. Remember that these signs could be sign of many issues and not just mesothelioma in dogs. For instance, difficulty breathing during or after activity could occur with a dog that is overweight or has heartworm.
If your dog is showing these signs and you do know of asbestos contact then you should inform your vet as soon as possible. A simple X-ray can often show irregularities in the lung lining. If something shows during the X-ray then your vet may order further tests for your dog which may include tests such as a urinalysis or a biopsy of your pet's lung. If your dog is diagnosed with mesothelioma and you or a family member has been around asbestos then it is very important that you tell your doctor so your own health can be watched.
Treating mesothelioma in dogs can be very expensive and often will not cure the dog of the disease. Treatments may include surgery to remove fluid from the lungs or chemotherapy, just as you would with a human. It is important to realize that a finding itself cured of this disease is almost nonexistent and the euthanasia of your pet may be the best option even if it is a difficult decision for you and your family. Often, these difficult and heartbreaking decisions are actually what are best, especially with mesothelioma in dogs.
Mesothelioma is a nasty cancer, whether it is a cancer in dogs or humans. If you know of asbestos on your property then contact the proper authorities to find out what your options are.
