During the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Team USA swimmer Michael Phelps won a total of 8 gold medals. Before that he won 6 gold and 2 bronze medals from the previous Olympic Games in Athens. That may be a legitimate reason as to why young Ryan Lochte began flipping 600-pound tires as a warm up and why he started dragging 500-pound boat chains and throwing beer kegs over his head.

History of Michael Phelps

Born in Baltimore, Michael Phelps was born for swimming. He first began to swim at a young age when he was diagnosed with ADD. The pool was an outlet for his energy. He made an Olympic debut at the age of 15, in Sydney, Australia. Although he did not receive any medals, he made up for it in 2004, in Athens. (6 gold and 2 bronze medals.) In Beijing, Phelps had made the goal of winning 3 gold medals, however, he came back with 8, now winning a grand total of 16 Olympic medals. After the Beijing Olympic Games, Phelps began to spiral into a depression. He was caught smoking marijuana at a party and arrested for a DUI. After training in the water everyday for the past 5 years before Beijing, Michael had stated that he needed a break. He had taken off 2 years from his vigorous training and had not gone in the water. When he finally decided to compete in the London Olympic Games, Phelps only got about a year and a half to train, compared to his “rival”, Ryan Lochte.

History of Ryan Lochte

Ryan Lochte, another Team USA swimmer born in New York, was taught to swim from the age of 5. Both of his parents were coaches; however, he was frequently kicked out due to misbehaving. He would pull at other kids, dunk them under the water and hide in the other end of the pool. He only began to take swimming seriously in high school, when he failed to get through in the Junior Olympics. Ryan Lochte is a 6-time Olympic medallist. He won 1 gold and 1 silver medal in the 2004 Olympic Games and 2 gold and 2 bronze medals in Beijing, the 2008 Olympic Games. Despite his success, he wasn’t completely happy. After finishing behind Michael Phelps many times, Lochte wanted to be better. So he decided to change many things. He started with his training and his diet. He began by flipping 600-pound tires as a warm up. He would pull heavy boat chains and threw beer kegs over his head. Lochte also changed up his diet. Rather than eating his usual junk food, he started eating eggs, fruits, and a lot of salad.

Phelps vs. Lochte

Michael Phelps was planning to retire after London. He began with a bad start. He stated, “It was a crappy race…they just swam a better race than me a smarter race than me, and they were better prepared than me. That’s why they’re on the medal stand.” Due to only a year and a half of training, Michael just qualified for the 400IM; however, he finished in fourth place, for a change, behind Ryan Lochte. This had been Michael’s race. He had won it for 2 consecutive Olympic Games. He was happy that Lochte won it and kept the Gold within Team USA, however, he was upset that he didn’t even place. Let’s see what happens in the upcoming events.
