Microscopic Follicular Unit Hair Transplant
In the last few years, hair transplant surgery has come a long way. This method of restoring hair to places where nothing grows, is becoming increasingly popular. Also, a lot of scientific and technological advances have been made to make the surgery less risky and more successful. Back in the nineties, when hair transplants were still relatively barbaric, results looked a lot less natural.
The reason that the results looked so bad, was because of the way the donor hair was dissected. In those days, a strip of donor hair from the back of your head was dissected into bits of tissue that contained up to 12 hairs. These bits of tissue are called grafts. Today, these grafts are much smaller. This gives a result that looks a lot more natural. It's a good way of avoiding the doll hair effect, where the hairline looks like a field of corn rows.
Microscopic Follicular Unit Hair Transplants
Today, your donor hair is dissected in such a way that the naturally occurring groups of 1, 2, 3 and 4 strands of hairs are preserved. One graft will never have more than 4 hairs. When these grafts are implanted on top of the head to cover up the balding area, it can give you really nice density that looks cosmetically pleasing. The grafts with single strands are used to recreate a natural looking hairline. Never again will you have to go through life with the doll hair look, all thanks to microscopic follicular unit hair transplants (FUT)!
This technique has one additional benefit, by the way. The fact that the graft units are so small, also means that the recipient sites don't have to be so big! Today, a laser is used to create really tiny recipient sites. These sites will be just as big as they need to be to accommodate the grafts that are to be implanted there. Because the wounds are so tiny, they heal up really quickly. They won't leave any significant amount of scar tissue. So you are likely not to develop any complications because of this.
One thing that still could lead to complications, is the scar in the back of your head in case you will have a strip hair transplant done. This is actually a very important issue. Good results from FUT are one thing, but most clinics won't give you any info regarding hair transplants and the excessive scarring they can cause. Please research this topic as well before you decide to actually go through with the surgery!
