Midwives

Midwives are often seen in old TV shows such as "Little House On The Prairie", and that is why we tend to associate midwives as something from the past. A lot of people are surprised to learn that midwives are still around helping women to successfully deliver babies. Here are some benefits to using a midwife.
First Time Pregnancy
If a woman is pregnant for her first time she is often full of questions and concerns about being pregnant and the delivery. Family and friend support groups are great for women who are pregnant for the first time, but if you do not live near your family then hire a midwife is great. You do not have to have the midwife actually deliver your baby, she can just be there to support you as the Doctor does the work.
Nutritional Advice
Midwifes are full of great advice for expectant mothers. They can help you develop a nutritional menu that will provide enough nourishment to the growing fetus in your womb, as well as tasting great and fulfilling you hunger.
Single Mothers
If you are a single mother or your husband is constantly traveling away from home for his job, then a midwife can provide the help and support you need as your pregnancy progresses. If you do not have a partner for your Lamaze class then a midwife can support you by helping you out on your breathing techniques at the Lamaze class. Midwifes can also teach you proper Lamaze techniques in the comfort of your own home.
Women who practice midwifery have fees that are much less expensive then traditional Doctors and hospitals. You obviously will have a Doctor involved during the labor process, however the expense of a midwife is often off-set by less money having to be paid to the Doctors office for general visits in which you simply have minor questions to ask.
Midwifes generally will only work with low-risk pregnancies. If any complications are foreseen or noticed then the Midwife will immediately get a Doctor involved.
You do not have to use a Doctor if you are using a midwife, however this is only recommended if you are healthy and not a high-risk pregnancy. If you can use a midwife instead of a Doctor and hospital then you will be able to save a lot of money on health care costs because midwifery costs are much less then traditional medical facilities.
