Minecraft Server Creation

By Edited Mar 5, 2016 1 0

Looking for a simple step by step process to set up a minecraft server? Look no further! I am a server operator, and have set up multiple minecraft servers using a few different setups, all the while maintaining a players base that has been active for more than 8 months. I personally have been running a server for over a year.

Basics to setting up a server directly from minecraft.net (i.e. no mods etc.)

This is the most simple form of a minecraft server, usually capable of being run on low-end computers. This knowledge is just from personal experience, I am not responsible for any mishaps that may occur by doing these things.

Necessities:
- Minecraft_Server.exe and Minecraft_server.jar from Minecraft's download page at minecraft.net
- Access to your router/firewall
- PC to run the server on

Step 1:
- Download the required files, and put them into a folder together.

Step 2:
- Add a firewall exception to the port 25565 (for the purpose of this tutorial)
- Add the port 25565 to the router under applications, so that the port can be open for you to be able to run the server

Step 3:
- Run Minecraft_server.exe in the new folder you placed it in

Step 4:
- In order for friends to play with you on your server, you need to give them an IP address. They need an external IP, so go to whatismyip.org to get what your external IP is. Then just give it to your friends.

Step 5:
- Play! Assuming you did everything correct, you have a basic minecraft server set up! As long as your router and firewall have been set up correctly, and you have your external IP, you are good to go!

Setting up a bukkit server (More popular, allows for plugins)

Step 1:
- Download the latest craftbukkit build from Bukkit's website at bukkit.org in order to set up a bukkit server and place in a new folder

Step 2:
- Add a firewall exception to the port 25565 (for the purpose of this tutorial)
- Add the port 25565 to the router under applications, so that the port can be open for you to be able to run the server

Step 3:
- Run the downloaded file

Step 4:
- Add plugins! This is the customizable part of the server. Plugins allow you to protect your buildings, add ranks, add special commands and so much more. You can search or look through plugins at bukkit.org

Step 5:
- Run the server, shut it down, then configure plugins and properties for the server. This part is important. Many plugins require special information from your computer or other resources, such as database information or additional software (that will not be covered here)

Step 6:
- In order for friends to play with you on your server, you need to give them an IP address. They need an external IP, so go to whatismyip.org to get what your external IP is. Then just give it to your friends.

Step 7:
- Play! Assuming you did everything correct, you have a bukkit minecraft server set up! As long as your router and firewall have been set up correctly, and you have your external IP, you are good to go! Some additional work may be required to configure plugins. Refer to appropriate plugin pages for help.
