It is suggested that a dog-owner attaches identification tags with the collars so that are these creatures never get lost. Minimal maintenance is required for these collars, but a person needs to be careful to keep these objects away from excessive heat or moisture as that might damage the leather. Weatherproof and snow collars have also been devised to sustain in extreme conditions. Conditioners are present for cleaning and maintain the leather. Historically, one finds the application of leather dog collars in the Egyptian period. In ancient times, leather collars having spokes were used for the farm-dogs. During the Middle and the Dark Ages these collars were used in a widespread manner. Another disadvantage which is cited with some dog collars is that smells tend to develop due to the oils present in a dog's coat. Regularly cleaning the collar will help to address this issue and also extend the life of the substance. Whenever you send your dog to the water bodies, ensure that the collar is removed. This mitigates the risk of the dog getting snagged with any object in water. Initially for training purposes the collars are often used, but as the dog gets well-trained the use is reduced. Verbal commands would be adequate for a dog at this stage. The collar is never meant for behavioral control and it should be solely used to prevent a dog from getting lost or while walking.
