Modern Kitchen Cabinets and Contemporary Cupboards

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

Modern kitchen cabinets can make your entire room look updated. You might even be able to change your existing cabinets into a more contemporary design style to save money. This is the perfect design style for anyone who likes the "no frills" approach. It's also really simple so you might want to use it in a small kitchen for the appearance of a larger space.

Modern kitchen cabinets go by the less is more approach. The cabinets should be as simple as possible. Often they are just a flat door. You used to find this a lot in retro kitchens so there might be hope for those old cupboard doors after all. If you really want something different or special focus on the overall design of the cabinet instead of making things fussy. You might be able to find a wall of cabinetry where the doors open horizontally instead of vertically. This might not always be as practical because you'll have to hold the door open, even if it's above your head but it's a design style that your neighbors probably won't have.

Use a mixture of man made and natural materials. If you do go with a wood cabinet go all out with an exotic finish like zebra wood. On the other hand you can also find a wood that doesn't show a lot of grain on the door. You can mix it with contemporary frosted glass fronts. Another option is to just buy an oversized steel finish handle. Make sure that it's just a plain handle to keep with the modern look. Since stainless steel appliances are a must have for a contemporary kitchen this will tie the cabinets in with the appliances for a cohesive look.

Go with a painted finish. This is a great way to reuse your existing cabinetry and you can work with a lot of different colors. This is a great alternative to basic white cabinets and painted walls. Instead, get a contemporary look by using white walls and painted cabinetry. You could even paint them in a really bold lime green or orange finish. Be aware that the more daring you are in the paint color the more likely it is that you'll have to refinish your cabinetry when you sell your house. You can also stick with neutral colors that are still bold like black or chocolate brown.

When you are redoing your kitchen don't forget to add in an island. This will really help with the contemporary feeling as well as the basic function of your room. You might find that you even eat dinner at the island instead of the table. This way you can mix in brightly colored stools if you aren't up to repainting all of your cabinets in a bold color. You can even paint or stain the island a different color from the rest of the cabinets if you aren't up to refinishing all of the cabinets.

Modern kitchen cabinets are sleek and they make a big impact but that doesn't mean that they have to be expensive. With a little elbow grease you can make your room feel updated, even if it's been around for decades.
