On April 14th, 2015, kombatants both new and old of the series will enter the ring again to battle in Mortal Kombat X. This tenth installment will pick up where 2011's Mortal Kombat left off before skipping 25 years into the future during its storyline. Aged veterans of the series, their offspring and all new characters will be taking the stage to creatively defeat their enemies with deadly weapons, powers and fighting techniques. New to this series is the introduction of 'Variations', each character receives three different styles that not only change their look, but their fighting style as well. So who is coming back to test their might?
Note: This list is a work-in-progress and is incomplete until the game officially launches on April 14th, 2015. The list of characters is gathered from a series of announcements, leaks and straight up blunders on console stores. Rumored characters will be added once confirmed through official sources and DLC characters like Predator, Jason Voorhees and the pre-order/DLC Goro will be added later once they are released.
Cassie Cage is new to the Mortal Kombat series with little known of her past other than she is the daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade. She leads a team of characters, mostly made up of the descendants of other Earthrealm fighters, through Outworld for unknown reasons.
Hollywood - Through this style, Cassie dons a pair of shades not unlike her movie star father, Johnny Cage. She gains the ability to perform a double gun attack mid-air and can use a nut-cracker to stun opponents.
Brawler - Along with the addition of a new green glow to her hands, Cassie is given a special takedown move where she can tackle her opponent and punch them. She will also be able to use arm breaker and air throw special moves.
Spec-Ops - Donning a special ops uniform not unlike her mother, Cassie can now call in airstrikes on the field as well as call laser guided missiles from the sky. She will also gain access to The American Way taunt.
Currently, Cassie's only known fatality involves her pulling out her two handguns, firing a bullet into each knee of her opponent then putting one bullet right between the eyes. She continues by blowing a bubble with her chewing gum and after the bubble pops, she places the gum in her opponents head wound, causing the blood to blow another bubble with it. When that bubble pops, the opponent falls dead.
D'Vorah is a half-human, half-insect fighter under the allegiance of Kotal Kahn, the ruler of Outworld.
Venomous -Through the secretion of toxin from her body, D'Vorah's attacks become poisonous. This allows her to chip the life away of her opponents even while defending.
Brood Mother - As a Brood Mother, D'Vorah gains the ability to call one of her insect minions forth to stun her opponents.
Swarm Queen - As the Swarm Queen, D'Vorah is constantly followed by a swarm of wasps around her body. She can use them to lift her opponents up with a tornado or summon bug bombs that will explode when touched.
There are currently no known fatalities for D'Vorah.
A staple in the Mortal Kombat series, Ermac is a red-clad ninja that specializes in using his telekinesis during his fights.
Spectral - As a spectre, Ermac gains the ability to fly around the screen, giving him unparalleled mobility. However, as a trade off for this advantage, Ermac is highly vulnerable to damage.
Mystic - Ermac's telekinesis is enhanced, allowing him to perform powerful telekinetic lifts and pushes. This increases hold time and allows him to perform the attacks from a longer distance.
Master of Souls - Ermac is accompanied to battle by three souls circling him that act as projectiles for him. The first projectile stuns while the others do damage.
One fatality features Ermac twisting and manipulating the body of his opponent into a series of grotesque forms.
Another fatality features him ripping off the head of his opponent telekinetically, lifting it in the air then shoving it back in their body through the neck hole all the way down into their belly. He then rips it out telekinetically again leaving a trail of intestines and a floating head.
Erron Black is one of the few new characters to Mortal Kombat X that is not related to anyone. As a first for the series, he is a gunslinger.
Marksman - This spec focuses almost entirely on ranged combat allowing for Black to fight from afar with great accuracy. To keep his distance, it also allows for a quick backpedal move that deals damage as he retreats.
Outlaw - Erron Black gains access to a sword for melee combat in addition to the use of his dual pistols. One of the signature moves of his Outlaw style is the ability to break his sword off inside an opponent to deal bleed damage.
Gunslinger - In addition to the usual melee moves, Black can quick draw his revolvers to do ranged attacks in addition to the performance of trick shots to fire projectiles in odd directions to confuse opponents.
Erron Black shoves a grenade into the body of his opponent and detonates it, sending shards of fine sand throughout at high velocity.
Ferra and Torr
Torr is a giant ogre creature who carries Ferra on his back. This odd couple are new to the Mortal Kombat universe, making their game debut in Mortal Kombat X.
Lackey - This variation allows for Torr to fight all on his own while Ferra is on the sidelines. With no companion on his back, Torr is able to engage in much more aggressive and deadly close combat.
Ruthless - Ferra and Torr charge into battle together with Torr wearing a white bloodstained mask. Ferra is able to stab Torr in the back to spur him on and also adding a boost to his damage in exchange for a portion of health.
Vicious - In this variation, Ferra becomes a human weapon for Torr to use. Torr can toss Ferra at opponents and when on her own, she is able to use her own grab.
Fatalities for Ferra and Torr are unknown.
Very little is known about Jacqueline Briggs other than she serves on Cassie Cage's Outworld team and she is the daughter of Mortal Kombat veteran Jax.

As a character present in the series since the very first games, it seemed only fitting that Kano was one of the first confirmed characters for Mortal Kombat X. He is a mercenary and the leader of the international Black Dragon crime cartel, renowned for his aggression and his cunning.
Commando - Kano's cybernetic eye takes on a yellow glow instead of red and he then gains the ability to counter both high and low attacks.
Cybernetic - Kano retains his classic red colored eyes and is enabled to use his eye for long range laser attacks and throw grenades. He also gains access to extended combos to juggle opponents.
Cut-Throat - Kano takes on a green color to his eye that gives him access to different attacks and combos utilizing his traditional weapon of butterfly knives.
Kano's fatality is a simple one, where he uses his eye laser to sear through his opponent's skull.
A series favorite, Kitana makes her return in Mortal Kombat X with her signature dual blade fans and adds Jade's staff to her arsenal. Princess Kitana is around 10,000 years old, but considered quite young in her realm of Edenia.
Royal Storm - Befitting a princess, Kitana is as graceful as she is deadly with her blade fans. This variation allows for additional range with her fan blast, a wave attack of blades and the ability to reflect blows.
Assassin - Kitana is imbued with increased agility allowing her to parry and do increased fan damage with the Sharpen skill.
Mournful - Taking on the weapon of her (presumably) fallen friend Jade, Kitana now fights with a long staff instead of her trademark fans. She also will use Jade's style of wielding it.
One fatality depicts Kitana pinning an enemy and splitting their skull with two fan-blade strikes.
Contrary to what his name seemed to suggest upon his reveal, Kotal Kahn is not a relative of Shao Kahn. Instead this newcomer to the series was a general under Shao Kahn's command. Kotal Kahn is of the Osh-Tekk race and served Mileena after the death of Shao Kahn. After Mileena was deposed, he seized power for himself, creating a civil war in Outworld.
War God - As a War God, Kotal Kahn gains access to the use of his large spiked club more often that allows for some close range and brutal fighting.
Blood God - This variation turns Kotal Kahn into a bit of a shaman, granting him the ability to gain different buffs by setting down different totems.
Sun God - Taking on a golden glow, the Sun God variation allows Kotal Kahn to access special moves such as the Sun God Choke and Soul Scorch.
Kotal Kahn's fatalities are still unknown.
New to the series, Kung Jin is the descendant of the series veteran Kung Lao. He serves on the team of descendants lead by Cassie Cage, but wears more traditional Chinese clothes opposed to Spec-Ops garb as he is, like his father, a Shaolin monk.
Ancestral - This variation is all about Kung Jin's bow. Not only can he perform charged arrow attacks that do long range damage and stuns, but he can perform more moves and combos while in the air.
Bojitsu - Bojitsu focuses less on the arrow firing function of the bow and more on its function as a deadly staff. Through this option, Kung Jin gets a series of combo starters that allow him to start extended combos through his staff. Instead of arrows, his bow now also just shoots out fireballs, but is otherwise a close combat spec.
Shaolin - Gaining the use of a chakram (a circular blade), Kung Jin gains the ability to use new combos with it and also throw it as a projectile. The chakram can also be used as a boomerang to attack enemies from behind.
Kung Jin does a back flip, kicking his opponents now severed head into the air and fires three arrows into their skull.
Although a self-titled pacifist, Kung Lao has been tossing hats and taking names since Mortal Kombat II.
Buzzsaw - Like the name suggests, Kung Lao's trademark hat now resembles a saw blade. The player will now have better control of the hat itself. Its speed can be adjusted and the hat will be able to be steered while in motion.
Hat Trick - The dragon symbols on Kung Lao's uniform begin to glow, giving him the ability to stop his hat in mid-air, essentially cutting off as portion of the fighting field for his opponent.
Tempest - The brim of Kung Lao's hat glows bright blue and the Tempest spec allows him to spin his bladed hat around his body. This move can serve as a counter for those who attack it while it can also defensively reflect projectiles.
Kung Lao throws his hat so that it is stuck in the ground but still spinning. After tripping his opponent he then gives them a swift kick in the back of their head, they fall on the hat and split their face open.
Although technically dying along the way, Liu Kang takes the stage again as he has in most games in the franchise since the first one. He is cousin to Kung Lao and has generally been a fighter on the side of good, but his alliances within this game remain uncertain.
Dragon's Fire - This spec is much like Liu Kang's usual style. He has the ability for expanded flying kicks and bicycle kick combos as well as being able to shoot a fireball projectile.
Flame Fist - Liu Kang gains bright, flaming fists that can shoot fireballs as well as do a unique bicycle punch move.
Dualist - Liu Kang switches between light and dark variations in this spec, each with unique combos and special powers.
Lui Kang's fatalities are still unknown.
Making her first appearance in Mortal Kombat II, Mileena is the evil clone of Kitana created by Shang Tsung's sorcery with some Tarkatan adjustments to the face area. Despising her "sister", Mileena sees herself as the true ruler of Edenia, but settles for Shao Kahn's throne in Outworld after his death. She was later deposed and now battles Kotal Kahn for her Outworld throne.
Ethereal - Mileena becomes as a ghost, able to teleport more frequently and longer distances. This enables her to both set up and escape form attacks with ease.
Ravenous - This spec focuses more on biting with that ferocious mouth hidden away under the mask. Mileena gain both high and low pounce moves and Mileena essentially become a very "in your face" fighter by trying to biting it right off.
Piercing - The Piercing spec allows Mileena to gain more moves to better utilize her Sai weapons. She can use them as split projectiles making them difficult to dodge as well as extends Sai combos several times.
Mileena jams here two Sai into an opponent, removes their head and then used here fangs to munch her opponents face off. Nom, Nom.
As a frequently appearing major villain in the series, Quan Chi is among the most powerful sorcerers and necromancers in Netherrealm. Through his brute strength and mystical powers, he is able to constantly fuel his plots to take over not just Earthrealm, but all of reality. Unfortunately, his manipulative and deceptive nature has made him enemies with good and evil fighters alike.
Sorcerer -Along with his new blue eye and tattoo glow, the sorcerer Quan Chi gains the ability to cast spell circles on the ground that can either give him buffs or weaken opponents.
Warlock - As warlock, Quan Chi's gains a lovely pair of green skeletal hands that spring from his back and allows him to summon multiple portals that Quan Chi can use to zip around the battlefield more effectively.
Summoner - With red eyes and armor, in this spec Quan Chi can summon demonic bats to use as projectiles. These bats knock the enemy back which can open players up for juggling chains.
Quan Chi summons a floating dagger and causes his opponent to walk towards it with their mouth open. Once it is inside their mouth, he raises them up and slams them back down, splitting them in half.
Raiden is the god of thunder and the guardian of Earthrealm. He commands a vast host of supernatural abilities and has always been a source of guidance for fighters on the force of good. As it stands now, he is also the only character to appear in every single Mortal Kombat game.
Thunder God - Although in Thunder God, Raiden can fire several electric blast, this spec is more about flashy combos and close quarters combat.
Displacer - This style focuses more on closing and making gaps between Raiden and the opponent through the use of teleportation. The teleportation can even be used to initiate quick combo attacks.
Storm Lord - Raiden is given the ability to place lightning orbs on the screen and after activating them with a lightning strike, the orbs can stun any opponent that touches them. It is a great spec for herding opponents to where you want them.
Raiden's fatalities are currently unknown.
Loyal, unambitious and physically hideous, Reptile is a humanoid reptilian creature that is renowned for his stealth. His one goal in life is to find the last remaining members of his race and restore Zaterra to its former glory, freeing it from the grasp of Outworld. This goal is so consuming he is prone to fits of insanity over it. He was first introduced in the first Mortal Kombat game as a hidden character, the first ever secret character in a versus fighting game.
Deceptive - This style sees Reptile make better and more frequent use of his invisibility effect to confuse enemies and better travel the battlefield.
Noxious - Reptile puts off a noxious gas cloud around his body or on a certain areas of the battlefield that damages opponents who touch it.
Nimble -Reptile's speed is increases and his hits have the ability to stun or slow his opponents.
True to his trademark move, Reptile's fatality has him spraying his venomous and abrasive spit on an opponent, melting their face off.
Scorpion is a series regular since his debut in the first Mortal Kombat game. He is a skilled ninja and fighter, but an undead spectre that seeks revenge on Sub-Zero for the death of his clan and himself.
Ninjutsu - Players using this spec will be able to utilize Scorpion in all his ninja glory. It adds new combos using his dual swords as well as better control and further use of his classic "Get Over Here" kunai.
Hellfire - Taking on a more demonic appearance, Scorpion now has all the powers of Hell at his disposal including a Hell Ball projectile, Demon Fire and a Flame Aura that damages opponents as they hit him.
Inferno - Inferno allows Scorpion to toss a hellish spear as well as the ability to summon demonic minions to stun, damage or bind enemies.
Scorpion shoots a ball of fire through the center of his opponent, letting the heart drop into view. As the opponent falls to their knees, Scorpion slices vertically through their skull, letting their face fall away as they drop.
It is unclear which Sub-Zero will be featured as both Bi-Han and his brother Kaui Liang have worn the guise, regardless, this series classic will be back to freeze hearts and take names.
Cryomancer - Sub-Zero gains a blue skin tone and is able to create daggers, hammers and swords from ice to crush his opponents.
Unbreakable - Sub-Zero's mask becomes solid ice and in the Unbreakable style he is able to create walls of ice to protect himself as well as ice armor to lessen any bleeds or chip damage.
Grandmaster - Through the use of a powerful medallion, Grandmaster Sub-Zero is able to use icicle projectiles as well as create ice clones of himself.
Sub-Zero freezes the mid-section of his opponent then breaks it open to reveal their spine. He then breaks the spine with his hands and lifts the two halves of his enemy.
Sub-Zero throws his opponent onto a bed of ice spikes then stomps their body to drive the ice deeper.
Takashi Takeda makes his first appearance of the series in Mortal Kombat X. He is the son of series regular Kenshi and is trained in the ways of Shirai Ryu by Hanzo Hasashi, otherwise known as Scorpion. Being estranged from his father for most of his life, Takashi sees Scorpion as more of a father-figure and is especially loyal to him and those of the Shirai Ryu.
Shirai Ryu - Like this style suggests, Takashi uses Scorpion-inspired whip moves to throw his enemies around as well as uses several teleport options including a quick and air teleport.
Lasher - The Lasher is a range-heavy spec that features powerful ranged whip attacks, trips and anti-air attacks to keep enemies at bay.
Ronin - More akin to his real father, Takashi gains dual plasma swords that grant him powerful close combat options, but also has a beam projectile option.
Takashi Takeda's fatalities are still unknown.
These characters have been hinted at through cutscenes and other vague images from the developer. They may or may not join the list above (or the DLC character list below) at some point.
Bo Rai Cho
These characters will be available at a later date after the game's release through Kombat DLC Packs. They will be added as released.
Goro (He will be available on day one for those who pre-order Mortal kombat X, but will be paid DLC later for those who don't)
