Generally mothers-in-law are typecast as women who exaggerate all happenings so as to keep their recently wed son under their control. But in some cases, their wish and sensitivity or over-possessive approach towards their child may lead to histrionic personality disorder. This disorder can create tricky condition for the new wife and can lead to failure of their marriage.
Symptoms of Histrionic Personality Disorder
Mere display of signs or indications of histrionic personality disorder may not be enough to label that person as such since they can also be noticed in people with balanced nature or behavior. When these indications accumulate in a person they can prove to be a misery for others living with him or her.
A few indications of histrionic personality disorder are like behaving or dressing up in very obvious fashion; or over-reacting to issues of trivial nature; or showing extra closeness to new acquaintances. They change their moods too frequently, do not accept their mistakes easily and rarely take criticism sportingly. They have a tendency of holding others responsible for their weaknesses and failures.
Histrionic Symptoms in the Stereotypical Mother-in-Law
This disorder is mostly seen in women possibly because of community expectations which prohibit them from attracting attention as freely as men. The mothers-in-law who have such tendencies over-react to small situations and would always want their son to come to their rescue. For instance, for a minor injury they will shout at the top of their voice especially so when the son is seemingly engrossed with his beloved wife.
Even though Histrionic Personality Disorder is attributed to natural disliking attitude towards the daughter-in-law, this may not be true. The mother-in-law might have lot of affection for her daughter-in-law but at the same time does not want to lose or share the love of her son.
Overly Intimate Mothers-in-Law
Sometime the same mother-in-law shows too much love and closeness towards daughter-in-law early in the relationship it is just sheer exhibit of fondness. The reason behind this could be that she can take decision on behalf of daughter-in-law, but this may result in more of a predicament in their association.
Blaming Others and Seeking Attention
Most mothers-in-law want to be at the core of being noticed at every family get-together and will go all out to seek attention by creating sentimental atmosphere. It's very difficult for those people who cannot face condemnation at all. All wrongs are generally attributed to the most vulnerable objects-the in-laws.
To exist in the midst of these people who show histrionic disorder symptoms can be hard. More often than not the daughters-in-law develop a habit of ignoring these symptoms as sheer nature of the person. Unluckily, the association between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law gets adversely affected and may take a long time to restore.
