Moving Into a New Apartment

By | Sep 29, 2009 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

When it is time to move into a new apartment and with all the things you need to do, it can sometimes feel a little overwhelming. There is so much to remember and to take care of. In this article, I will list the steps that you should take to ensure that your move into the new apartment goes smoothly.

Pack Your Boxes

Make sure you have enough boxes to pack all your things away. You will also need tape and markers. Clearly mark what is inside each box and make sure that any possessions that can break a packed carefully.

Hire a Moving Company

Many people like to move their belongings themselves. However, I do recommend having a moving company do it for. While they may cost money, they are well worth it and save you a lot of time and energy. There is nothing worse than having only two or three friends struggling to move tables and waiting room chairs through narrow staircases and doorways.

Change Your Address

Call or logon to the internet to change your address for all the companies that you get bills from. This would include water and electricity, cable or satellite TV, internet and gas. You should also contact the post office to change your address so that any old mail can be forwarded to your new address.

Clean Your Own Apartment

I'd recommend that you pay a cleaner to do this. What might take you all day to clean, can take a professional cleaner a third of the time. They are also not that expensive and can give you peace of mind that the old apartment is properly cleaned.

Move In

Take you boxes to your new apartment. When moving in, make sure you don't leave valuables like TVs, stereos or outdoor electric grills out in the open for people on the street to take. It is also a good idea to have the locks changed, just to be safe. Place all the large pieces of furniture like bookcases and tables in their proper places, and then get started on unpacking your smaller valuables that are inside the boxes.

Check Everything then Relax

Check that your utilities are working, that you have all the keys and the smoke detectors. Once everything is unpacked, sit back and relax. After a few days, take the time to get to know your neighbours. A good idea is to hold a house warming party and invite your neighbours to attend.
