These groups of muscles work on the movements at the hip joint. One of the largest muscles of the body is the gluteus maximus. It forms the buttocks and is very evident in the human eyes. Because of its size, the gluteus maximus can extend the hips to bring the thigh in a vertical plane with the pelvis. Inferior to gluteus maximus is the gluteus medius that extends from the ilium to the femur. The primary function of the gluteus medius is to stabilize the pelvis during walking and to abduct the hip. Intramuscular injection is commonly delivered here. There are two muscles which are the iliacus and psoas major that fuse together to form the iliopsoas. These muscles are primarily hip flexor and acts on keeping the upper body straight. Adductor muscles are at the lateral side of the thigh which presses the legs to adduct it.

These are composed of semitendinosus, semimembranosus and biceps femoris which originate on the ischial tuberosity and run the thigh. The Sartorius is the longest muscle of the body and is a thin, strap-like muscle. It originates form the front side of the iliac crest and terminates at the middle side of the tibia. The quadriceps group is has three vastus muscles and one femoris muscle.
