By Edited Sep 21, 2015 0 0

Artist Name: James Brown & The Famous Flames

Song Name: Prisoner of Love

Composer: Robin-Columbo-Gaskin

Release Date: May 1963

Record Label: King

Chart Peak Position: Pop: 18 and R&B: 6

The lyrics to this song describes exactly how love makes one feel; how when someone is in love, they will do anything for that person and it is like they imprison themselves. Once one falls in love, it is too late; they are already dedicated to that person and they can’t help themselves. The person is always on their mind, awake or sleeping and even if that person is with someone else, there is nothing that can set them free. This happened to a friend of mine, where he was madly in love with this girl and she became his life. It sucks because when the relationship is over, it seemed as if there was nothing else in life that mattered to him and it took him a very long time to get over her.

 Artist Name: Jimmy Soul

Song Name: If You Wanna Be Happy

Composer:  Frank Guida, Joseph Royster

Release Date: June 1963

Record Label: SPQR

Chart Peak Position: Pop: 1 and R&B: 1

This song is all about being happy for the rest of you, exactly what the title states. However, it is referring to marrying a woman you love and you will be happy for the rest of your life. It is anticipating love creates a happy life. The lyrics of the song are constantly repeating the idea that if you want to be happy for the rest of your life, you just have to get the girl to marry you. I personally do not believe that to be happy for the rest of your life all you have to do is get them to marry you; having someone you love dearly in your life will definitely make you happy however there are many other things in life that could also make you very happy for the rest of your life.

 Artist Name: Barbara Lewis

Song Name: Hello Stranger

Composer: Barbara Lewis

Release Date: July 1963

Record Label: Atlantic

Chart Peak Position: Pop: 3 and R&B: 1

Barbara Lewis sings about how a man she loves dearly is in and out of her love; as every time he comes back it is like seeing a stranger because he was gone for so long. However, she is still very happy to see him come back because she loves him very much, no matter how much he hurt her by leaving. This is something my girlfriend experienced with a man she was in a relationship with. He would leave her and never be heard from, like he feel off the face of the earth and randomly come back when we wanted to, and no matter how much she was hurt when he left, she was so excited to see him again she would just take him back.

Artist Name: Martha & The Vandellas

Song Name: (Love Is Like A) Heatwave

Composer:  Holland-Dozier-Holland

Release Date:  July 1963

Record Label: Motown/Gordy

Chart Peak Position: Pop: 4 and R&B: 1

The main message of this song is that love is a crazy rollercoaster which consists of constant ups and downs. I think the ups and downs are what make love so interesting and fun, because you never know what to expect next. Ever since the beginning of time love has never been a static element, it is constantly evolving and developing in some way or another. I feel that the beat of the song portrays what the lyrics are saying because as soon as you hear it you start moving your body, which is what love also makes you do.

 Artist Name: Doris Troy

Song Name: Just One Look

Composer:  Payne-Carroll

Release Date:  July 1963

Record Label:  Atlantic

Chart Peak Position: Pop: 10 and R&B: 3

This song makes me think about young girls and the expectations they have to live up to because of the society we live in; whether it is now or 50 years ago. When I was younger I would always believe in love at first sight, that I would just look at a man when I am older and I would instantly fall and love and marry Mr. Right. This is partially because of the media and how it portrays certain things; a lot of people are naive and take things to seriously until you come to reality. That is what Doris Troy sings about, and it is given away just by looking at the title of the song Just One Look.

 Artist Name: Freddie Scott

Song Name: Hey Girl

Composer: Gerry Griffon, Carole King

Release Date: August 1963

Record Label: Colpix

Chart Peak Position: Pop: 10 and R&B: 10

Freddie Scott sings about a girl that he loves dearly and will not be able to live without her and that if she leaves he will feel empty inside. This is exactly what love does to a person because love is very powerful. The melody of the song shows how Freddie Scott feels because of the smooth swing to it; the tone in his voice also expresses it especially how he emphasizes certain words which shows how he feels. When you love someone dearly you never want them to leave and when they do leave, it makes you feel empty inside.

Artist Name: Garnet Mimms & The Enchanters

Song Name: Cry Baby

Composer: Meade, Russell

Release Date: October 1963

Record Label: United Artists

Chart Peak Position: Pop: 4 and R&B: 1

During the listening of this song by Garnet Mimms & The Enchanters, I was exceptionally pleased by what I heard. I liked the beat of this song because it was very upbeat and catchy. Also, the voices of the singers were very pleasant and in sync. The idea behind this song revolves around the fact a guy likes a woman who is in love with someone else but cries to him, which is something that happens frequently in life. They explain how a woman is confused and uses a man who loves her only when she needs him; which has happened to one of my close friends. She was in love with a man who talked to her and went to her only when it was convenient for him and the other times he was with another girl. I did not like what he was doing to her and I always told her until she left him.
