My Favorite Movie-Grease is the Word

By | Jan 26, 2012 | 2 Comments | Rating: 0

Of all the films I have seen since I was born, my all time favorite is Grease.  It is a movie that I can watch over and over without getting bored.  I have lost count how many times I have viewed it.

My love affair with the movie Grease did not start with the 1978 film.  It began back in 1976, when my mother took me to see the Broadway production of Grease.  As a fan of the television show “Happy Days”, I was drawn to the costumes, dance numbers and music. After seeing the show,  I immediately had my mom take me to the store to buy the music soundtrack, which I wore out and had to replace several times.

There was no happier teenager than I when Grease was released as a major motion picture musical in the summer of 1978.  I saw the movie more than once and again wore out the soundtrack album.

But what is about Grease that makes it my all-time favorite movie?

First and foremost, it is the music and dancing.  As a veteran of twelve years of dance classes, dancing and singing was my thing.  I loved the musical comedy genre and would spend Sunday afternoons watching musicals on our local television channels.  As I listened to the Grease soundtrack, I choreographed dances to the songs and dreamed of the day I would dance and sing onstage when my high school produced this musical.

Alas, that dream would not come true for me.  While I was in all of my high school’s musical productions, Grease would not be produced until the year after I graduated.  I was really upset!

Another reason why Grease is my all-time favorite movie is that the soundtrack has so many memorable songs.  Starting with Frankie Valli’s Grease is the Word and ending with the amazing dance finale We Go Together, there is not one song that is a dud.

Because it is film, the dance sequences were able to be larger than they were on Broadway.  The raunchy “Greased Lightning”, while a lively number on the stage, is taken to a dream sequence level in the movie.  There are costume changes within the song that could not happen on the Great White Way.

The dance numbers during National Bandstand were longer than on the Broadway stage.  As someone who could watch hours of dance at a time, I was enamored with the dance numbers.  No one danced like that at my high school!

Besides the song and dance numbers that had me mesmerized,  I enjoyed the story line.  The cool guy digs the smart chick and tries to win her over…while that certainly did not happen to me during my high school years, it was fun to watch Sandy and Danny’s romance unfold through out the movie.  There was a chemistry between John Travolta and Olivia Newton John that could not be scripted.  When two actors have this chemistry, the audience is in for a treat.

One of the most memorable scenes of the movie was not a musical dance number.  When Danny and his arch rival enter a drag race, the score that accompanies the action has me at the edge of my seat…even though I already know the outcome!

A soundtrack that leaves you singing, awesome dance sequences, a fun storyline and action…that is why Grease is my favorite movie.

Nice article. I like this movie too. They filmed all the carnival scenes at the end of the movie where Sandy struts her stuff around the corner from my house. We watched the filming. It was filmed at Marshall High in Los Feliz, CA. Good times.

That is so cool! I read that it was over 100 degrees during the filming of that scene.
