My Favorite Things

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 7 24

"You Get a Car and You Get a Car . . .!"

Television talk show host Oprah Winfrey famously shared her favorite things with her television audience. The normally calm and composed studio audience members would jump up and down and cheer wildly every time a new item was announced because they knew they would each receive all of Winfrey's favorite things publicized on that show. These shows became some of her most popular and tickets were always sought-after but almost impossible to get.

Although I can't give anything away like Oprah Winfrey, I can tell you all about my favorite things!

My Favorite Things

Music: I have a soft spot in my heart for the music of the 1970s. How can you go wrong with artists and groups such as; Average White Band, Bee Gees, Boz Scaggs, Donna Summer, Doobie Brothers, Elton John, Grand Funk Railroad, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Jim Croce, Kool & The Gang, Marvin Gaye, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Orleans, Paul McCartney/Wings, Queen, Rare Earth, Rose Royce, Rufus, featuring Chaka Khan, Santana, The Eagles, The Isley Brothers, and Tower of Power. The 70s brought us a wealth of musical talent that is as fresh and enjoyable today as it was back then.

Comic Strip Character: Ziggy is the little guy with the "big heart" who always sees the glass as half-full. Although he seems to be living in a world where "Friday the 13th" is every day, Ziggy never asks "Why me?" Instead, he always sees the good in people and tries to give to others whenever he sees a need. Although he's only a comic strip character, people could learn valuable lessons from Ziggy!

Pancake Mix: The absolute best pancake mix that I've ever used is Stonewall Kitchen Farmhouse Pancake & Waffle Mix. It's easy-to-use and the results are a fluffy, golden brown and delicious pancake. It makes me hungry just thinking about them! If you would like delicious pancakes from a mix, you need to try Stonewall Kitchen. In addition to their original pancake and waffle mix, they also offer blueberry, banana, chocolate chip, toasted coconut, and gluten-free pancake mix.

Musical: "Wicked" is the story of how the witch from the West became wicked, in the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. This wonderfully amusing and visually captivating musical takes you back in time to the birth and early life of Elphaba, who later through unfortunate circumstances becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. The characters are charming, interesting, and fun to watch as they tell this whimsical story through narrative, song, and dance. If you would like to forget your troubles for a few hours and be thoroughly entertained, not to mention leave the theater feeling happier then when you arrived, see the musical Wicked.

Mascara: I discovered Maybelline Great Lash Mascara when I was in junior high school and it has been my favorite mascara ever since. Maybelline's Great Lash Mascara always delivers, giving me the look of long and thick eyelashes. I've tried other mascaras but I always returned to Great Lash.

Toys: Ugly is the new cute when it comes to stuffed animals, and "Ugly Dolls" are some of the best novelty items for children and "children at heart." These toys have won several awards, including "The New York Toy of the year award"; "The Parent's Choice Award"; "The TD Monthly Top Toy Award"; "The Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Best Toy Award Gold Seal"; "The iParenting Media Hot Award (for the Ugly Doll Card Game); and "The National Parenting Center Seal of Approval."

Book: "Frankly, my dear . . ." You know the rest. This is one of the most famous movie lines and although it is not verbatim, it comes from the book "Gone with the Wind," the Pulitzer Prize winner for Fiction in 1937. Written by Margaret Mitchell, the book is a classic and tells the story of Scarlett O'Hara, the spoiled daughter of a well-to-do plantation owner who loses almost everything and finds her match in an unlikely partner, the womanizer, Rhett Butler. The story takes place in Atlanta during the American Civil War.

Movie: "Marty" is a romantic movie about a 34-year-old single butcher from New York, who never seems to have luck with women until one evening when he meets a 29-year-old "spinster" at a dance club. The woman, Claire, had just been dumped by her blind date and was devastated until Marty came to her rescue. While dancing, Marty utters a most interesting line, "We ain't such dogs as we think we are!" and that is the beginning of a most unlikely match-up. This movie is a refreshing take on what it's like for people who are past their prime in life. People, who may not be the most attractive but deserve love, just like everyone else.

Popcorn: I enjoy popcorn and often have it as a snack. Throughout the years, I've tried several varieties and recently came upon one of the best pre-prepackaged brands that I've ever had. The popcorn had a buttery flavor, it was lightly salted and tasted as though it had just been popped. This delicious tasting popcorn was from the company "Popcorn, Indiana®" and it is now the only popcorn that I will purchase.

Cartoon: My favorite cartoon has always been "The Flintstones." The Stone Age Flintstone family, Fred, Wilma, and Pebbles, and their best friends Betty, Barney, and Bam-Bam always seem to have the best time, even when Fred and Barney get into trouble. I watched this cartoon as a child, and years later, my children watched it. Someday I hope to watch this cartoon with my grandchildren.

How To Book: "Ben Hogan's Five Lessons The Modern Fundamentals of Golf" is the only book I'll ever recommend for learning how to play golf or improve your golf game. This book covers all aspects of golf and provides priceless information and instruction about the most important aspect of playing the game, the golf swing. This book is full of some of the best instructional information you will find anywhere and it's a classic, originally published in 1957, it has withstood the test of time.

Car: Although I've never owned a Volkswagen Beetle, that cute little round car instantly became my favorite the first time I saw one. I remember watching the movie "Herbie the Love Bug" and thinking how great it would be to own that Beetle. The Volkswagen Beetle, a car that's as cute as a bug!

Interesting favourites (excuse my British spelling). I absolutely agree with your choice of "How to.." book. My musical favourites are just a couple of years earlier than yours - and have a British bias (Cream, Free etc) and a French singer Mireille Matthieu. Car would have to be an MGT (just a dream).

Yes, Ben Hogan, in my book, was the greatest golfer who ever played the game and his "How To" book is priceless! Also, I've heard of the musical group "Cream" but can't quite remember "Free," and I'll have to check-out the music of Mireille Matthieu. As far as cars, it's good to have a dream! Thanks so much for the comment, davwrite!

Thank you for your charming list of your favorite things. I, too, loved the musical "Wicked," and I have driven a Volkswagen Beetle Convertible for the past five years. It is one of my favorite cars, ever! This was a lovely idea for an article.

I love a great Broadway musical ... Les Mis, Miss Saigon. Books -- just books in general. I like to turn pages and smell the musty smell of an old book. Music -- all of it! Cars -- gotta have muscle. Great list and fun stuff to think about.

I've just been to a wedding where the bride loved VW camper vans so much so had one on top of her wedding cake (a small sugar replica sculpture obviously, not an actual one)
I hope you don't take your like for the VW beetle as far as that Introspective, like the article and a thumb from me.

That is so funny, toebunkers; it reminds me of my 16th birthday when my mom told me she bought me a VW - turns out it was a toy VW on top of a birthday cake! Thanks so much for the comment.

This article really gave me an "aha!" moment. I'm so grateful that I read it. I've had a difficult time adjusting to my latest food sensitivity. It began with gluten free, then evolved into eliminating cow dairy, which has now snowballed into corn intolerance as well. It often feels like my world is so small. Your article has shown me that I still have many favorite things in my life as well as many new ones -- if I just open up my eyes and look. I wanted to thank you for that.

Great list. I agree VWs are cute and I love 70s music, although I do prefer Billy Joel to Elton John, and love the musical Movin' Out.

Great article! My favorites include Far Side and Bloom County cartoons, my car would definitely be a 1970 454 Chevelle SS (great car, and I was born in 1970!) and I just have a thing for muscle cars in general. Also love musically anything that is fast and loud and that rocks but I totally have a soft spot for Pink Floyd and could listen to them for hours on end. Snack would be homemade chex party mix. And here's an embarrassing revelation for you...my guilty pleasure favorite thing is sitting on the couch, reading a great book and wearing my Indianapolis Colts Snuggie! :)

Who couldn't love a gal who loves muscle cars, The Far Side, and Pink Floyd? Oh, and who also wears an Indianapolis Colts Snuggie (Go Blue!). Thanks for the comment!!
