Myths: The Bible, Sex and Divorce

By Edited Dec 7, 2013 1 0

Woman on Top is a sin:

There is nothing in the bible that states that women cannot be on top. There is also nothing in the bible that states that men always have to be on top. With regards to this, the couple has to decide what works for them and enjoy it. The bible says the following:

1 Corinthians 7:4 The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does

This text shows that if you wife wants to be on top, you don't have to complain and if you want to be on top, she should let you have your way with her.

Sex Was the Original Sin

If sex was the original sin, most people will be sinners. Well most people are sinners but will be even worse sinners. There are a lot of suggestions about what the original sin was. Here is what the bible says:

Genesis 1:27-28 (New International Version)

27 So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

If God created them male and female, it will be asking for trouble if sex was not allowed. In verse 28 God directed them to be fruitful and increase in number. There is no way that was going to be achieved without some sexual activity. They got the message and did multiply. They did a good job when you think about the millions of people now living on the earth. With regards to procreation, they scored high points. What was the original sin? They scored miserably low when it comes to not eating of the forbidden tree. That disregard for the law of the Lord got them kicked out of the Garden of Eden.

God Loves Homosexual and Lesbian

This is true and at the same time it is not true. Isn't that a little confusing? It is confusing but let me expand on it. The bible says that god loves everyone and states the following:

Mat 5:45 "that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous" New International Version

If you were to go by what the text in the book of Mathew chapter 5:45, god loves the righteous and the unrighteous. Does that mean god loves Homosexuals and lesbians? Now let us look at what the bible says.

English Standard Version 2001
1 Cor 6:9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality,

In the text above taken from 1 Cor 6:9, it says that unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God. It is interesting because it says those who practice homosexuality. What the bible seems to condemn is not the person but rather the practice. This implies that God loves those with homosexual tendencies as long as they don't practice homosexuality. The text also shows that adulterers will also not inherit the kingdom of God. The bible doesn't single out homosexuals but anyone who practice what the bible regards as sin.

Multiple wives aka polygamy

In you were to read the Old Testament, you would have noticed that some men had multiple wives. Does that imply that Christians today could do the same if it were legal? I am sure a lot of men would love to add a younger woman to their family just to replace the older woman. It is true that God allowed this in the Old Testament. But when Jesus came to the earth, he said he came to fulfill the law. That is to say, he came to update previous understanding of the word of God. Let us see what the bible says.

Matthew 19:3-6 (English Standard Version)

3And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?" 4He answered, "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5and said, 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? 6So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate."

So Jesus clearly stated here that one man and one woman and nothing more. The days of one having multiple wives were over. Another disciple of Jesus also nailed the point by stating:

1 Corinthians 7:2 But because of immoralities, each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband.

Even after the death of Jesus, the disciples still followed through with his teachings (one man, one wife, one woman, one husband)

Divorce is not allowed in the bible

In some mainstream churches, the notion of divorce is not conceivable. It means you could separate from your spouse but you are not allowed to be married to another. This has been encouraged for centuries. It has also led to many fleeing the churches and taking things into their own hands. It is true that God did not created marriage and gave people the right to walk away if they are not happy. The idea of marriage is to stay together through thick and thin. You share the joys and the sorrows. You share the laughter and the tears. You become one from the day you say yes. Ok, that will be the ideal situation. Is divorce legally binding according to the bible?

Matthew 19:9 "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery

You may divorce only if you spouse commit a sexual sin. That is to say, marital infidelity is the only reason you may get a divorce. You may also choose to forgive but that is a different situation. You may not divorce for any other reason. For example, you got bored with your spouse, that doesn't count.
