NASA warns of devastating solar storm in 2012 :

My conversation with NASA Scientist David Sibeck

With so many people ignoring the warnings from NASA regarding the devastating solar storm predicted for 2012, I decided to investigate further and contacted NASA scientist Dr. Sibeck. I was eager to follow up with him on a certain statement he made back in 2008 when he was quoted as saying that "we're in for a tough time in the next 11 years." This was a rather disturbing message that didn't seem to get much attention from the media. In our exchange, I asked him to update his projections for the upcoming solar cycle. David wrote:

"No change in the forecast for space weather over the next several years, but we have make sure that we don't overly alarm people. The things that are threatened by space weather effects are:astronauts spacecraft, precision GPS navigation short wave radio communications, specially over the north pole."

This sounds like no small problem he is describing. The purpose of this message is intended to alarm people so that they begin to prepare. The concern is only that the public may become overly alarmed. That is why messages like these are delivered in a calm, cool, reassuring manner so as not to prematurely disrupt society and cause mass panic. Other official sources are paining an even more grim picture.

In June of 2010 NASA issued an upgraded warning in which Dr. Richard Fischer, the director of Nasa's Heliophysics division says "It will disrupt everything that is electronic and that "Large areas will be without electricity power and to repair that damage will be hard."

Adding more weight to this prediction is the the National Academy of Sciences warning that "power grids, GPS navigation, air travel, financial services and emergency radio communications could all be knocked out by intense solar activity".

We should be reading between the lines here and preparing for the worst. I'm going to gather as much solar storm survival info as I can and continue writing about it and sharing with the public. One of the most important facts I have uncovered so far is that we will have at most 12 hours to prepare from the time that NASA issues the warning so be ready. I'll do my best to produce some good "how to" articles on this issue since preparing for disasters is something that has always preoccupied me. Good luck and help pass the word by recommending this article.

Remember, the only real protection from the sun is loving the one who made it!
