The Best Tablet Computer and eReaders Compared

If you trying to decide upon electronic reading device, an eReader or a tablet computer are your two main options. In this article, I will compare the best-selling NOOK vs Kindle vs iPad.

Deciding to buy an iPad, NOOK, or Kindle is not an easy decision and should not be taken likely. The main factors that should influence your decision is price, software, hardware, and functionality of each device.

  • The Nook and Kindle are priced relatively the same with basic Wi-Fi versions starting at $139 and 3G capable versions topping out at $189. The iPad will cost between $500 to $630 depending upon the hard drive size.
  • The Kindle has the longest battery life on a single charge of a month. The NOOK will last about three weeks on a single charge and the iPad lasts about twelve hours.
  • The NOOK is the clear winner when it comes to the amount of books that can be stored on the device. The NOOK can store up to five-hundred thousand books and can use an additional external storage to hold even more books. The Kindle can hold four-hundred and fifty-thousand books and the iPad can store sixty thousand.
  • The NOOK again wins when it comes to available eBooks. The NOOK has over 2-million available titles available and the Kindle has less than a million. The iPad is lagging drastically in the amount of eBooks available with not many titles available.
  • The NOOK, Kindle, and iPad are all relativley the same size. The Kindle is the lightest weighing device at 10. 2 ounces, the NOOK weighs 12.1 ounces, and the iPad weighs in a bit heavier at one point five pounds.
  • All three devices are Wi-Fi compatible and have higher end versions that can connect to wireless 3G networks.
  • The readability of the NOOK and Kindle are very similar. They both use an E-ink that is easy on the eyes. The NOOK and Kindle also both have anti-glare screens making reading in sunlight pleasant. The iPad is reported to be more difficult to read in direct sunlight.
  • The Kindle and iPad both have the ability for text-to-speech, but the NOOK does not.

If you are looking for an electronic device to only read eBooks, I recommend the NOOK or Kindle. Choosing between the NOOK vs Kindle, however will be a decision a shopper will need to make on their own.

The iPad is recommend more for people that would like to do more than just read with their electronic device. The iPad is better for web browsing, sharing photos, gaming, and is in fact much more like a laptop computer than an eReader.
