Like Tarot cards, astrology, palmistry, and tea leaf reading, numerology is an occult method of divination. Numerology offers believers a way to divine the future, and reveal hidden connections between people, events, dates, and places. Just as astrology has its roots in a real science (astronomy), numerology is a pseudoscience that evolved out of formal mathematics. In ancient times, the mystical properties of numbers were studied along side the practical applications of mathematics.
Today, one of the most popular applications of numerology is in choosing a name for a baby. Finding Your Name Number
Your personal name number is derived from the numerical values of the letters in your name(s). There are two ways to assign numbers to the letters of the alphabet, and both give completely equivalent results. Which method you use is a matter of preference.
Method 1: A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, I=9, J=10, K=11, L=12, M=13, N=14, O=15, P=16, Q=17, R=18, S=19, T=20, U=21, V=22, W=23, X=24, Y=25, Z=26

To find your name number, add up the letters in your name. If you get a number that has more than one digit, add up those digits. Repeat the process until you get a single digit from 1 to 9. This is your numerology name number. For example, if your name is Catelyn, your name number is generated like so:
3+1+20+5+12+25+14 = 80
8+0 = 8, with Method 1, or
3+1+2+5+3+7+5 = 26
2+6 = 8, with Method 2

Analyzing Your Name Number
Numerology is an art like any method of divination, and there is a lot of freedom in choosing which name or names to analyze. Some numerologists go by the name or nick name you most commonly use. Others take the first and last name, and some take the whole name. Which name or names you want to analyze is up to you.
For each digit from 1 to 9, there are positive and negative traits associated to each number.
1 + creative, individualistic, leader
1 – stubborn, resentful, bad-tempered
2 + loyal, comforting, peaceful
2 – shy, insecure, restless
3 + energetic, lucky, good looking
3 – unlucky, vain, naive
4 + practical, intelligent, loyal

For example, if your name is Catelyn Smith, your first and last name numbers are 8 and 7, and your total name number is 8+7 = 15 -> 1+5 = 6. However, if you go by "Caty", then your nick name number is 4. All of the numbers 8, 7, 6, and 4 represent something about your personality and potential.
The number of your first and nick names represents your persona, while your full name number represents your inner potential. Double and triple numbers are especially lucky, and amplify the positive traits associated to the number.
Other Applications
You can apply number meanings to birth dates, addresses, and names of family members or friends. In numerology, your birthday number represents your future potential, and it is particularly lucky when your birthday number matches one of your name numbers. The number value of your street address (using the letters and numbers) represents negative influences in your home life, and your insecurities.
With groups of people or couples, it is a sign of compatibility and harmony when people's name numbers match, or add up to 9. When choosing baby names, think carefully about the spelling, middle names, and nick names. Pick names that are in harmony with the other family members, the birth date, and your home.
