Nasa Moon Bomb
What is the Nasa Moon Bomb?
The Nasa Moon Bomb is what it sounds like: a bomb, made by Nasa, and for the moon. The NASA Moon Bomb was created by LCROSS - Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite - with the sole purpose to discover if there was water on the moon. The Nasa moon bomb was more like a vehicle and was called Centaur. On October 9th, 2009 Centaur was sent with a velocity of over 10000 kilometres per hour into a crater called Cabeus. The results have been nothing short of astounding.
The Mission
The Nasa Moon Bomb was one of Nasa's cheaper endeavours. The Moon bomb was actually the cause of two different impacts, one from Centaur and one from the spaceship carrying Centaur. The basics of the mission were fairly simple. The space shuttle which was carrying Centaur would fly over the crater Cabeus. As it flew over it, with pinpoint accuracy, it would then drop Centaur. Centaur would then crash into the crater at speeds of up to ten thousand kilometres per hour. Then the space shuttle would fly through the some 300 tonnes of Moon dusts and relay the data back to Earth; then the space shuttle would crash into the same crater it just received data from.
The Results
The Nasa Moon bomb created two different kinds of plumes. The first one, caused by Centaur was a high angle, low level one, while the second one - caused by the space shuttle - was a long angle plume that was full of heavier Moon material. Both of these substances which were thrown into the air hadn't seen any type of sunlight for billions of years.
And the results proved as much.
Using a spectrometer to determine what kind of substances the material held, the scientist at Nasa were able to determine that the Moon did indeed have water. It is now speculated - where as before it was seen as the opposite - that the Moon is abundant with water. This is great news if we ever want to create a Lunar base or any type of further colonization. Also the Moon - living and breathing on it - would be the first step in our journey toperhaps colonizing Mars, as well as other planets.
The data from the Nasa Moon Bomb is still being studied today; recently data has shown that there are other intriguing substances in the moon dust.
