The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering aims to "present and preserve the traditional and contemporary arts of the American West."

In Elko true modern day cowboys still exist. Northern Nevada has many huge ranches with real cowboys that only come into town occasionally. Northern Nevada is truly "Cowboy Country" and thus provides an excellent and natural point for Cowboy poets and cowboy historians to converge annually.

The annual event is called National Cowboy Poetry Gathering but the annual event has a lot more to offer than just cowboy poetry. This year featured the "Riders In The Sky" and their wacky and fun filled show that focuses on the classic western movie songs.

The week long event is filled with a wide range of events that all concentrate on the cowboy and his lifestyle. Some of the events they held for 2010 include:

Viewing the classic western movie "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre"
Cowboy Celtic performing their amazing mixture of music and poetry
Ian Tyson concert

Each day at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering there are so many different events and concerts that it is practically impossible to see and do everything that is offered.

Ramblin' Jack Elliot was schedule to appear but had to cancel because he was nominated for a Grammy. Ramblin' Jack Elliot will probably appear at the 2011 National Cowboy Poetry Gathering unless he is nominated for another Grammy.

The annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering also offers many workshops. From cooking, ranching, writing, and much more. Regardless of your interests and hobbies you will find something to keep you amused while attending the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada. You can even learn to Swing dance.

The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering is a great event for families. At each National Cowboy Poetry Gathering they also offer many workshops for teens and kids. If you have a kid between the ages of 10-18 and they are interested in writing make sure you check out the youth writers workshop. This year at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering the youth writers workshop was taught by published western authors Terri Farley and Suzanne Morgan.
